Big Island’s Mauna Loa erupting for first time in 38 years; lava flow contained to summit
Mauna Loa, the 13,681-foot volcano on the Big Island, is erupting for the first time in 38 years. The eruption began about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
