The Respect for Marriage Act was passed by the Senate today. It is, in so many ways, an imperfect bill. It is also going to protect millions of LGBTQ families, and I’m grateful to Senator Tammy Baldwin for leading on it.

I wrote about the bill here: https://charlotteclymer.substack.com/p/i-hate-the-senate-bill-and-we-need#details

I Hate the Senate Bill and We Need It to Pass

Listen now (13 min) | It sucks. And it's our only real option. We have to pass it.

Charlotte's Web Thoughts
@charlotteclymer It's a compromise. Some ground was given to the religious interests, who won't be forced to officiate weddings they don't want to sanction, but at least the states can't interfere.
@toxtethogrady @charlotteclymer They wouldn't have to anyway, under the First Amendment, so that's a redundant sop. Anyway, "churches" CAN'T "marry" anyone, to begin with; only most (not all) of their CLERGY can, as state actors. What churches control is matrimony, not marriage. Only the state has the power of marriage.

Thanks Charlotte. Appreciate your writing.

@charlotteclymer Marriage is among the powers reserved to the States, and beyond the purview of Congress. Congress cannot define marriage. (US v. Windsor, 2008) This bill does what Congress CAN do: clarify and reinforce the doctrine of the Full Faith and Credit Clause, so that the fed and all States are required to respect each other's lawful marriages. It's a legislative rejection of the 'strong public policy' doctrine purportedly defending DOMAs.

It's not ideal, but it's what's doable.

@charlotteclymer

The Word didn't implode in 2015 when SCOTUS made the ruling, so I don't understand the NO votes.

@charlotteclymer I cannot imagine the relief millions of families feel. I am so grateful Senators did the right thing.
@TeeSocial @charlotteclymer I am one of those families and, yes, it is indeed a relief.
@charlotteclymer
Why does this always seem to need people in the background smiling benevolently whenever some politician announces new policy? Is it a subtle form of marketing or is it more blatant psychological manipulation?
@charlotteclymer: And all sorts of family-valuers are already complaining how much they hate this law because they have concerns that wrong families might get some of that sweet, sweet respect.

@charlotteclymer "There are not ten Republican senators who would support full marriage equality."

Aye, there's the rub. Great article, really well written.

@charlotteclymer so grateful for Sen. Baldwin, and for so many elected officials, activists and faith communities that supported this bill, too! #LoveIsLove
@charlotteclymer
Still 30 some odd Republicans voted against it! That is their M.O., all for freedom for gun lovers & bigots but not for people who love each other🤬
@charlotteclymer, thanks so much for this. I was pumped when I thought #MarriageEquality was about to be #codified, and then felt like the rug was pulled out when I learned what the bill actually did. The best we can get for now, but lots of work left to be done.

@charlotteclymer we live in world of condoned faith-based discrimination.

Since when is doing wrong to others ok for some people because they have “faith” and not for others?

Do no harm should be everyone’s obligation not a suggestion with a religious out.
