The Respect for Marriage Act was passed by the Senate today. It is, in so many ways, an imperfect bill. It is also going to protect millions of LGBTQ families, and I’m grateful to Senator Tammy Baldwin for leading on it.

I wrote about the bill here: https://charlotteclymer.substack.com/p/i-hate-the-senate-bill-and-we-need#details

I Hate the Senate Bill and We Need It to Pass

Listen now (13 min) | It sucks. And it's our only real option. We have to pass it.

Charlotte's Web Thoughts
@charlotteclymer It's a compromise. Some ground was given to the religious interests, who won't be forced to officiate weddings they don't want to sanction, but at least the states can't interfere.
@toxtethogrady @charlotteclymer They wouldn't have to anyway, under the First Amendment, so that's a redundant sop. Anyway, "churches" CAN'T "marry" anyone, to begin with; only most (not all) of their CLERGY can, as state actors. What churches control is matrimony, not marriage. Only the state has the power of marriage.
