I recently discovered the American Antiquarian Society’s Farber Gravestone Collection, with 13,500+ images of lettering, skulls, rubbings, and generally great gravestone graphics. Better yet, it's all methodically cataloged and browsable by theme, location, date, stone carver, etc.

Do yourself a favor and set aside some time to browse through it all.

There’s also an introductory essay about the collection with lots of background info (PDF):

… By the way, this 1707 gravestone for Deacon Thomas Adgat is among the earliest examples I know of sans-serif English-language lettering:

@andthisismrspeacock I grew up in Massachusetts and still have family both around Boston and in western Mass, so there’s a good chance I could indeed be passing by some time. Thanks for the tip!
