“I think that #COVID19 is setting us up for a hundred years of problems.” People are ignoring the long-term risks of repeated infections. They should stop doing so and #WearAMask.

A century of COVID-19: what history tells us about the long-term effects of a pandemic

USC research showed that people born during the 1918 flu pandemic faced increased heart disease risk. COVID-19's legacy could be worse.

@augieray I ask why no one after all this time has developed a mask that is truly effective and an acceptable design for the public
@RADC I am not sure what that means. You are asking for two different things--effective masks tend to be bulky and less acceptable, while masks the public wants are often next to useless. The question should be why we haven't made the use of N95-like masks (which tend to be comfortable and effective) more socially acceptable.
@augieray My point is simple Design “something else”
@RADC I'm no expert on mask design, but people rave about the 3M Aura, so I think the mask you want already exists. Still, you have to appreciate you've asked for two mutually exclusive things--effectiveness and comfort/acceptability. I want a fast sports car and I want it cheap--but what I should do is focus on the cars I can afford that balance my needs. Same is true with masks. They're out there already. https://www.health.com/condition/infectious-diseases/coronavirus/3m-aura-niosh-approved-n95-mask-review
The 3M Aura N95 Mask Is the Most Comfortable Respirator I've Tried

One Health writer says the NIOSH-approved 3M Aura N95 Mask is the most comfortable respirator she owns. Soft and lightweight, this N95's domed shape and three-layer paneling makes it breathable enough to wear all day and even at the gym. Shop it on Amazon while it's still in stock.

@augieray in the US the SSI/SSDI disability process must be reformed to consider the aspects of long COVID. Much as COVID spelled out we must have universal healthcare in the US, it’ll be ignored by our broken government as well. Failure to address both, or either properly will hasten collapse.

@augieray Thank you for this. It is sad how this perspective is not more widely known and respected.

Just one more thing: this article is from 2020. I would love to read how the same researchers assess the risks now in 2022 - with Long Covid now being a more and more common diagnosis. Are you aware of any publications on this from them?

@mediumflow There are a slew of studies demonstrating COVID leaves many with damaged brains, hearts, lungs, livers, reproductive systems and immune systems. I've not seen an article like this one--tying it all together so well--but if you're interested, I am tracking these many studies for my own purposes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12VbMkvqUF9eSggJsdsFEjKs5x0ABxQJi5tvfzJIDd3U/edit?usp=sharing

@augieray Wow, impressive. Thank you a lot for this!!!
@augieray
I think it's setting us up for a return to the stone age. Eventually populations will get small enough that variants stop spawning, or at least stop spreading. Air travel isn't helping us in this matter at all.
@juls
@noyes @juls I don't expect it to be that bad, but I do think we're going to so lifespans decrease. Eventually, people will be forced to come to terms with COVID due to the health and economic impact. It'll be a lot of sad and needless suffering we could've avoided had we been more cautious.
@augieray @noyes @juls the oligarchs don't care about #COVID because they think culling the population of the old and disabled is a good thing. Those people are "drains on the system." The only value they see in people is their labor.
What they don't understand, and are going to realize too late, is that COVID is decimating the entire global labor force, not just old and disabled people.
We're headed for a worldwide depression.
