Hello, all! I'm a longtime NYT journalist turned NYU academic, and I'm thrilled to be here! I've reported on stories overseas, in DC and around the country. But these days, I examine slavery and its modern-day legacies, focusing on how slavery fueled the growth of contemporary institutions, like Georgetown and the Catholic Church. Next book in 2023! I loved the serendipity of birdland and hope to find some of that here #histodons #journalism #blackjoy #blackmastodon #goodreads #introductions
@rachelswarns Welcome! Happy to see journalists and authors join here (and not that other place).
@rachelswarns In writing my book about NYC history, learning about the role that enslaved labor and people played in building wealth for some of NYC's most famous names was revelatory.
@Rbratspies Would love to hear more about this!
@rachelswarns you are at NYU, I am at CUNY. Let's find a time to talk. Would love to learn more about your work, and to share mine.

@rachelswarns My brother works as a dishwasher, pays below a living wage.

A coworker on parole recently quit due to a dispute with management and he ended up back in prison because the terms of his parole said he can't quit without another job / parole officer approval.

How is that not modern slavery? That angers me, it ain't right.

Anyway welcome to Mastodon!

@rachelswarns it all started with west African local kings selling their prisoners of war to us... for guns, gin, and tools. Untillthe english forced them to stop the trade in the mid-1800s.. Ghana...etc..
@rachelswarns Your bio, for me, = feeling closer to the imminent transition from Twitter to a safer place to land.
@rachelswarns I'm late to the game, but hello and welcome! This book sounds like it is going to be a very interesting read!
@rachelswarns slavery and the Church, one of my favorite topics. Welcome!
@rachelswarns Once you get rolling, I think there's more serendipity here than at the other place. There's no algorithm telling you what to look at, for one thing.
