If you accomplished ~anything~ academically during the pandemic, such as:

• submitted an application
• earned a degree
• passed a class
• did research
• learned something
• taught somebody
• submitted a manuscript
• stuck with it
• changed course
• set healthy boundaries
• figured out what works for you
• helped a colleague

you did it in Very Hard Mode, and I salute you!

If you got your butt kicked, you’re not alone 💜

@academicchatter

@academicchatter looking at the list of people who boosted this is a great way to find new academics to follow.
@sbarolo @academicchatter I did my healthcare job 😂
No time to do a degree
@sbarolo @academicchatter I needed to see this.
@stevegis_ssg @sbarolo @academicchatter me, too. I'm still, presently, getting my butt kicked. 😮‍💨
@UUXMNR @stevegis_ssg @sbarolo @academicchatter I learned how to play the guitar, had several meltdowns and managed to keep both my marriage and my job.
@sbarolo @academicchatter I learned about more liquor stores in my area, does that count?

@sbarolo @academicchatter @robinshipton

* won #NaNoWrimo in 2020 & 2021
* completed three writing projects (two of them I got money for)
* taught myself how to use #DazStudio

…all while the earth has been a pathogen-filled flaming dumpster. And I’m only getting started.✊🏾

@sbarolo @academicchatter
My nephew passed the bar.
I am still in awe!
For my part, planted a semi-successful tomato garden.
@sbarolo @academicchatter I did all those things during the pandemic! And I am a new person because of it 😎

@sbarolo @academicchatter

Lets see, what did I do during the pandemic?
- Graduated high school, started university (Mechanical Engineering)
- Actually learned h ow to study and keep up with classes
- Started doing research (Systems engineering)
- Passed some classes, dropped a class, and got used to the fact that I can't get a 4.0 like I did in high school
- Submitted an abstract and began writing a conference paper
- ...and more?

Thanks for the support, I think I needed to hear this.

@sbarolo @academicchatter
I started water flossing daily. Does that count?
@AnonymooseGuy @sbarolo @academicchatter this is excellent, I wish I had picked up better habits!
@sbarolo @academicchatter I did all of these 🤩 thank you for the acknowledgment…I also had many shitty days.
@sbarolo @academicchatter I submitted two applications and got accepted for both, I decided to wait for a year and started in 2022.
@sbarolo @academicchatter Thank you, I really needed this. I did teach (at uni), but I also quit academia (should that be a hashtag? "Why I #QuitAcademia "?) during the pandemic, because I just couldn't do it anymore. Academia was killing me.
@asajonsen @sbarolo @academicchatter sorry to hear that. Was there something about the Swedish (?) system specifically or more was not what you wanted in life?
@nuclearidini @sbarolo @academicchatter Faults in the system. I taught academic writing (all levels) and loved it. However, due to decades of bad political decisions, universities in Sweden are now filled with students who lack both necessary prior knowledge for their chosen field and basic language skills. In the end, I had to deal exclusively with frustrated students who wanted quick fixes for skills it would have taken them years to achieve.

@asajonsen @sbarolo @academicchatter It is interesting to consider your perspective. My impression is that Swedish students are relatively well prepared, also in the academic writing. You have better and worse performers, but most of my students are able to write a manuscript in English and need relatively few stylistic corrections! Even in England it wasn't as smooth!

Which coort where you studying, if you don't mind me asking?

@nuclearidini @sbarolo @academicchatter I have worked for 15 years, Swedish academic writing mostly, 3 different universities. Teacher training programs, medical students, business, engineering programs, etc. Lectures, workshops, and individual advice. English language programs are not as poor, and bigger universities (such as Lund) attract students who are slightly better prepared academically, especially in the scientific field.
@nuclearidini @sbarolo @academicchatter
If you speak Swedish, I really recommend this documentary:
https://urplay.se/program/217798-skrivglappet
It shows just what I'm talking about, and a few of my old colleagues are interviewed.
Skrivglappet | UR Play

Tv-dokumentär. Om ungas bristande skrivförmåga - både bland studenter och ute i arbetslivet. Och om orsakerna till det.

@sbarolo @academicchatter took my first job in higher education in Fall 2019, also coordinating my entire program while trying to learn how to be a prof. Trying to figure the most basic things out and BAM! Covid. Still bewildered and wondering, "is this normal?" SMH.
@sbarolo @academicchatter the pandemic got me back to academia/research indirectly through attending a post bacc to be an md. But applied to PhD work this fall for next fall.

@sbarolo @academicchatter
1) was an ER and primary care doc in a global pandemic
2) gained 10 lbs and got diabetes 2 (turns out working too much and eating your feelings while doing 1 is not healthy)
3) lost 40 lbs and controlled the diabetes with diet/exercise
4) didn't get COVID or die
5) learned to set better boundaries at work

So I'm feeling pretty good about that list

@sbarolo @academicchatter I had not planned on getting my MSEd during the pandemic, but I did it! Higher academics has always been a struggle for me so it was extra extra hard mode.
@sbarolo @academicchatter reading this toot and realising there is a high possibility I've always done everything in very hard mode. I thought things were easier during the pandemic 🤷‍♂️
@bananamangodog @sbarolo @academicchatter I published my second scientific book in 2021, but that didn't change anything in my academic "career".
@sbarolo Really really appreciate this toot as someone who completed their masters during the pandemic, but was left feeling really stuck in life -- as if I hadn't really made any progress in life the past 3+ years.
@ryn you’re still here, AND you earned a degree! Not too shabby!!
@sbarolo Thank you so much!
@sbarolo @academicchatter Made 50+ videos on computer music in MaxMSP in one weekend. I’m pretty noticeably fried by the end, but now other schools are teaching with them as well…
@sbarolo @academicchatter Yeah now that I look back on it, being an FFA officer, leader of a few clubs, and after school things I suppose I did do things and kept up with myself, I should have utilized that more when applying for colleges but by that point I had a bit of self doubt :(
@sbarolo @academicchatter I did a lot but even more in the past year! Up for tenure (3 years in COVID)! Here’s to hoping that what I’ve done is enough!
