If you accomplished ~anything~ academically during the pandemic, such as:

• submitted an application
• earned a degree
• passed a class
• did research
• learned something
• taught somebody
• submitted a manuscript
• stuck with it
• changed course
• set healthy boundaries
• figured out what works for you
• helped a colleague

you did it in Very Hard Mode, and I salute you!

If you got your butt kicked, you’re not alone 💜

@sbarolo @academicchatter Thank you, I really needed this. I did teach (at uni), but I also quit academia (should that be a hashtag? "Why I #QuitAcademia "?) during the pandemic, because I just couldn't do it anymore. Academia was killing me.
@asajonsen @sbarolo @academicchatter sorry to hear that. Was there something about the Swedish (?) system specifically or more was not what you wanted in life?
@nuclearidini @sbarolo @academicchatter Faults in the system. I taught academic writing (all levels) and loved it. However, due to decades of bad political decisions, universities in Sweden are now filled with students who lack both necessary prior knowledge for their chosen field and basic language skills. In the end, I had to deal exclusively with frustrated students who wanted quick fixes for skills it would have taken them years to achieve.

@asajonsen @sbarolo @academicchatter It is interesting to consider your perspective. My impression is that Swedish students are relatively well prepared, also in the academic writing. You have better and worse performers, but most of my students are able to write a manuscript in English and need relatively few stylistic corrections! Even in England it wasn't as smooth!

Which coort where you studying, if you don't mind me asking?

@nuclearidini @sbarolo @academicchatter I have worked for 15 years, Swedish academic writing mostly, 3 different universities. Teacher training programs, medical students, business, engineering programs, etc. Lectures, workshops, and individual advice. English language programs are not as poor, and bigger universities (such as Lund) attract students who are slightly better prepared academically, especially in the scientific field.

If you speak Swedish, I really recommend this documentary:

It shows just what I'm talking about, and a few of my old colleagues are interviewed.
