Finally the Pierce County Sheriff trial is underway. The county seat is Tacoma, Washington, so this is a pretty high-profile case. The sheriff called in law enforcement in the early morning hours on a newspaper carrier who was delivering papers for multiple publications including the Wall Street Journal in the Sheriff's home neighborhood. The white sheriff doubled-down with continued harassment of the Black newspaper carrier such that the sheriff now is subject to an anti-harassment order.

Case: State v. Troyer, Pierce County District Court No. 1AC002225
Judge: Honorable Jeffrey Jahns (Visiting Judge, Kitsap County)

Jury selection often interesting and this one is no different. One potential juror had a chainsaw-weilding nephew who was killed by Pierce County deputies. Another potential juror has a husband who golfs with lots of other law enforcement, and she doesn't want her husband to get any "flak" from the other golfers. And so many people seem to have attended Wilson High School between 1973 and 1980. #JurySelection #WilsonHighSchool #Tacoma
I missed some the group voir dire from yesterday but now hearing some additional discussions of motions in limine. And I am having to remind myself that this is Washington State District Court, not Superior Court. So to prosecute a sitting sheriff, even in a lower level court, involves a huge amount of resources that are not often amassed for regular citizens.
