Oh look. Chinese bots are flooding Twitter in an attempt to obscure news about protests. Too bad there's no alternatives to Twitter.

Or is there? 🤔

@atomicpoet is the Fediverse immune to such manipulation?

@creatinglake Nothing is immune.

But better equipped? Right now, certainly.

@atomicpoet how is the Fediverse better equipped against bot manipulation? By simply not having algorithms that can be exploited?
@creatinglake The Fediverse is better equipped than Twitter in that there's actually well-moderated instances that exist.
@atomicpoet that makes sense at this scale but I wonder what happens as the Fediverse grows, especially given that the Fediverse doesn't have great business models at the moment. I am certainly not knocking the fediverse, I have high hopes for its future.

@creatinglake But that's the genius. The Fediverse doesn't require scale. If I want, I can self-host and do my own moderating—choosing who and who not to federate with.

And if I can't self-host, I can join instances with moderation to my liking.

There's a business model.
