Check out our new publication “How to improve scaling from traits to ecosystem processes” by JuliaChacón-Labella et al in @TrendsEcolEvo Several recent studies question the usefulness of trait-based ecology. We argue that these studies often suffer from one or more widespread misconceptions https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0169534722002749 … we offer a road map on how to scale from traits to ecosystems (1/n)
Past studies that have claimed weak links with traits and ecosystem functioning often (i) conflict with the conceptual foundations of Trait based ecology (TBE), (ii) lack theory- or hypothesis-driven selection and use of traits, (iii) tend to ignore intraspecific variation, and (iv) use experimental or study designs that are not well suited to make strong tests of TBE assumptions. Addressing these aspects could significantly improve our ability to scale from traits to ecosystem functioning (2/n)
To improve the implementation and testing of trait-based theory, we clarify four mechanistic steps needed to scale from traits to ecosystems. These steps are based on core trait-based theory. Taken together, these steps explicitly detail the linkages between the environment, traits, communities, and ecosystem functioning #TraitBasedEcology #Traits #FunctionalEcology #Scaling #Ecosystem (3/n)
@[email protected] I'll have to read this.
@My_plants_dance To discuss with Amit? 😁
@kerstinpierick yeah 😂 we can all discuss it together. Gotta get Brian J on board by the look of it.
If anyone could send me the PDF via dm I'd be very grateful.
