Elmer is immersed enough in the right-wing media bubble to know full well how this tweet would be perceived by the “alt-right” douche brigade. Sure enough, it was seized upon as validation by Pepe types.
Given Elmo’s tendency to make “jokey” references to meme-y numbers like 420, etc., there can be little doubt that this is an intentional dog whistle for his white nationalist supporters.

@dhepworth @jacklerner And as for the notion that he’s only repeating the same number that appeared in the Massimo tweet: well, the plausible deniability is part of the shtick (e.g., “What? I’m just making the ‘O.K.’ hand sign!”). Wise up. He knows what he’s doing.
