Could it be that Musk has actually done us all a massive favour by making Twitter entirely inhospitable?

I'd like to think so. Without that push we'd still all be over there, knee deep in transphobia. If Mastodon (etc) can be a safe place where we can finally breath a little freer, then as painful as this change is, I'm hoping ultimately it will be for the better.

@mejafoss These thoughts have been on my mind. I notice my mental mood is better the less I’m on the bird app.
@Reborn_Cat_Mom I notice the same. And it seems to be only getting worse every time I go there.

@mejafoss Agreed.

I’ve been off more lately. Trying to work up to actually delete the app from my phone 🤣

@Reborn_Cat_Mom eeesh I'm not there yet! 😅 There's still a lot of people on there and if my presence can be a force for good then I'll keep one foot in that door
@mejafoss @Reborn_Cat_Mom as soon as elon musk started oppressing his employees I deleted Twitter lol.

@mejafoss And that is my struggle. Would I be helping or contributing to metrics for the ego of a certain rich person.

I don’t know if I made the right choice.

@Reborn_Cat_Mom I think if what you needed to do was leave then that was the right choice for you and you should absolutely not second guess that x
@mejafoss I must say I enjoy it much more here now, no GC bollocks to worry about.
@ellieraeuk It's nice isn't it :) Not that I ever got much targeted at me (no idea how I got off so lightly), but it was always there in the background
@mejafoss I haven't had anything targeted to me either, but still see it around all the time in the replies to other peoples tweets. I don't see anything like that here, it's so much more chilled.
@mejafoss it’s like night and day between here and there. each time I go back to check there, it’s just an endless pit of despair.
@carodjah The vibe there is bad ngl. Not sure if being here just makes that more obvious, or if it is genuinely getting worse. Maybe both.
@mejafoss probably both, ye. vibe here shows you what social media used to be, and vibe there is getting worse because now the bigots know the rules don’t matter anymore. I can’t open a tweet without 70% of the replies being hate now.
@carodjah It feels like they've really become emboldened yeah. If Twitter continues down this path it will be absolutely worthless to anyone.
@mejafoss I really like it here, but I miss some people who haven't moved, Gal la mode, Chrono Katie, and a few others.
@MJS We should just go in there and grab them, like rescuing them from a burning building 😅
@mejafoss @MJS
Actually I am doing *exactly* that with peeps I know. A DM that includes an invite to my server (and an open offer to help them get settled here). It's worked in a three cases in the last two weeks! 💜
@Natasha_Jay @MJS ok yeah actually that's a really good idea. I'll try and do the same ☺️
@mejafoss unfortunately I think he’s now created the most effective far-right social network, and that could have implications for all of us going forward
@scottaw implications for sure. I believe the 'most effective far-right social network' will be an absolutely vile place to be for all but the most unhinged of society. We'll see how effective and culturally/politically valuable that actually is.
@mejafoss I hope I’m wrong and “not very” is the answer 😁
@mejafoss Exactly how I feel. I'm using social media the way I used to back in the day, to foster community and share some positivity and happiness. It keeps me abreast of some of the rough shit (that's part of community development), but it isn't just doom scrolling, I don't feel like it's impossible to be light hearted

@ada @mejafoss
Or the word I use is ... 'Playful'

Totally 👍

@Natasha_Jay @mejafoss Yes, that! Exactly Natasha :)
@Natasha_Jay I've been on Twitter so long now. Gosh, 'playful' that sounds nice
@mejafoss That's how I look at it.
@mejafoss right? I couldn't agree more!
@mejafoss I would never have put the trans flag after my name on the bird app!
@mejafoss That is certainly a plus. The downside might be that bigotted voices go uncountered now. Especially since he is now banning everyone his far right mates tell him to. How many fence sitting centrists will it radicalise verses how many will leave finding it too toxic.
@mejafoss Maybe so. The problem with Twitter is that everyone is doing basically the same thing at the same time, and enemies are given too much warning of what activists are planning to do. #BlackTwitter's #BLM movement was hampered by the fact that police routinely showed up to disrupt their events and drive people into panics, hoping the public would blame the organizers. A more decentralized approach would be proof against that stuff.
@mejafoss maybe! The concept of decentralization and why social media needs it has hit me like a brick!
@mejafoss
I just removed it from my open tabs and that made me smile. I miss the access to real-time information on a huge diversity of topics, but this is already 'plenty' and I am just happier not bogged down in a cesspool of unpleasantness.
@mejafoss I'm convinced that we're in the infancy of decentralized social media. I built this server like 24 hours ago, and already feel amazing knowing how supportive the #Mastodon community is.
@mejafoss Been thinking that also! Once I got to mastadon, it felt so much calmer, dare I say safer, where it made me realize how bad twitter was! All those wasted hours of sleep wracked with worries during those doom-scrolling evenings. I will never go back.
@mejafoss we'll have to see. The internet as a whole is just wild

@mejafoss So true, on so many levels. It seems weirdly analogous to opening up our eyes and causing us all to finally end an unhealthy, abusive relationship that we weren't *quite* ready to let go of before.

In hindsight, it's crazy we all held on there and stayed in that mess for as long as we did.

@mejafoss Time we followed each other and opened up to a “kinder” environment.
@mejafoss He may well have done us a favor. Now it's on us to keep this place nice.
@mejafoss He is making it very clear what sort of place he wants Twitter to be, so it is easy to decide whether you want to be there.
