1. We know that Muslim charities have been unfairly surveilled in Canada.

After our report with the University of Toronto,

And months of community advocacy,

the government called for a review into the problem.

This week,

Our concerns about the scope of the review were confirmed.

2. This week,

the Taxpayers' Ombudsman expressed his concerns to the Senate Committee on Human Rights that the review he was tasked with will have major gaps and that he would be unable to ascertain all sides of the story because of a lack of access to the files from the CRA.

What does that mean?

We have suggested in our report that the CRA appears to engage in discriminatory conduct when auditing Muslim charities.

3. Now, during a review,

the CRA will not provide fulsome disclosure to engage in an independently assessment.

Justin Trudeau made it clear at the National Islamophobia Summit alongside Diane Lebouthillier that the review would set the stage for next steps in the future.

That’s why we’ve spent months advocating since that the review would be comprehensive & get full disclosure.

We were right to be concerned.

Statement from Canada’s Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson on the progress of the examination into the concerns expres...

Following her participation in the National Summit on Islamophobia on July 22, 2021, the Minister of National Revenue, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, asked our Office to conduct a systemic review to investigate the concerns expressed by certain charities, run by Muslims about their treatment by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and to engage other charities led by racialized communities about their experiences with the CRA.

4. We look forward to working on solutions to this problem with government on an expeditious basis,

or we risk the entire review process.

That’s because it would make little sense to conduct a review of systemic racism & Islamophobia at the CRA that doesn’t actually work.

We will provide further updates and recommendations soon.
