So sick of the ‘anti foreign’ rhetoric. #Refugees. #International #Students. #NHS staff. Every vote they think they’re winning by this is a vote based on lies and won’t last. They can’t turn back time. The #UK is stronger for its #diversity and weaker for its prejudice. Division is cheap and dirty politics. Always has been, always will be.
@nisreen ...it's just frustrating that Ministers and talking heads in the media aren't being challenged on their rhetoric more thoroughly by presenters/commentators
@nisreen Hear, hear... 👏🏻
@Justice30 @nisreen just come back from visiting my mum in hospital. Staffed by wonderful nurses from across the world. We are so much richer as a society for their contribution socially and economically.

@nisreen

Well said 👏 👏

@nisreen But it's going to take a LOT more suffering by a LOT more people until UK will finally begrudgingly accept that.
@Judeet88 @nisreen It's unforgivable it has to come to that though. It's shocking and disgusting.
@dem_cath @nisreen Indeed, but the hardest lessons are the hardest to learn, and UK people are going to find it hardest to let go of decades of careful deep grooming from media and tv.

@Judeet88 @nisreen

I grew up as a brown kid in 1970s/80s and whilst things aren't quite as bad as they were then (and even improved by late 1980s) I really think this country is partly sliding back to those times - OTOH multiculturalism is more entrenched today out of sheer necessity, such as those of us who now work in health and social care (I'm not a frontline healthcare worker but keep the computers and telephones running)

@nisreen

The problem I see here is "we're full" is a simple answer to a complicated problem, and thus will be lapped up the patrons of certain publications.

I'm not even sure that it comes from a place of overt racism for some people, they just believe its the only way that they can improve services in this country, which is obviously an enormous lie, but its currently one that flies, and its certainly being pushed by racists, as well as the government that are using it to cover their (...)

@nisreen own lack of action.

Until more people see things getting worse with less immigration, then they are not going to see through that lie, however, and we will continue to see crap like "oh not *you*, *you're* one of the good ones" or demonisation of entire countries populations as they are apparently only coming over here to take advantage of clearly non-existent benefits. It honestly makes me ashamed of my country to see this happening here, we're all just bloody humans after all.

@nisreen And as a country, we are and always have been extremely diverse, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Celtic, Viking, Roman all formed Britain by 1100, then add in Polish, German, Indian, African, Italian etc immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries.(I’m sure I’ve missed a few, but the point is we are VERY multicultural, and it’s not new).
@nusher @nisreen Tangentially, this is one thing I'm enjoying about Mastodon—it feels much more international here, or at least more European. Not dominated by US culture or English-speaking culture.
@nisreen I've had to completely leave our local FB group since the Home Office housed some refugees in our local hotel. The anti-asylum seeker rhetoric is strong and some of things I see posted are just vile. Why do people have to be like this.
@rebeccalinnett @nisreen unfortunately nimbyism at its worst.
@nisreen I agree with you entirely. Sadly, we live in an increasingly bifurcated world. #LoveNotHate
@nisreen all true. Foreign students contribute £millions to the UK economy too, as well as keeping many UK #universities afloat. Economically illiterate as well as #racist. Nice work #conservatives
@nisreen when racism filters down from on high what can be expected
@nisreen A very sad situation, I believe contrary to the #UK's tradition of rewarding merit over origin.
@nisreen I agree entirely. Sadly, division has ever been the way - blame others for the problems that face us. It's such a pity that so many are so blind, or so stupid, that they cannot see it.
@nisreen completely agree. We did a small Thanksgiving dinner (for the first time) for an American, with two Iranians, an Argentinian and a Cambodian. Our lives are richer for such a cultural tapestry. 👍🏼
@nisreen It has been 30+ years, but I shared a dinner table with a Brit for a few nights. His anger over the 'foreign invasion' was all he could talk about. I was a bit stunned. It wasn't until Brexit that I realized others shared his anger. Was sorry to see the UK leave the EU. Here in the US, division and dirty politics rule. Sad for us both.
@nisreen As someone who's been so incredibly lucky to learn abroad, this crusade is painful & to have to make a case for welcoming foreign students by detailing Britain's economic benefits from them, is *also* painful. The real value of international education and its soft power cannot (& should not) be measured in £. My heart aches for every young person deprived of such an opportunity.
@nisreen fomo disease.. fear of missing out .. we live on a planet & we must learn to share its bounty equally for 2 long it’s been unbalanced millionaires cause poverty

@nisreen
I remember going back home and visiting my grandma.

She said something something derogatory about immigrants.

I said "nana, I'm an immigrant now".

The following discussion completely changed her mind.

@Eric0Lawton @nisreen Astounding to me how my some of my relatives who are themselves immigrants or first generation from immigrant parents can denounce and use derogatory names about other relatives who are new immigrants or first generation, even from the same country/region. I tell them, what are you, royalty because you were here five minutes long?! I mean, come on.
@nisreen definitely agree… migrated on here for a better experience btw..
@nisreen During the Brexit campaign I grew to hate the term "foreign" because of how lazy it is. We're Italians, French, Swedish, German and more. We're not foreign. (I'm an English citizen). The word foreign makes it easier to alienate anyone that is not English. I wish that the word "foreign" could be banned from being used by right-thinking individuals.
