Music Twitter! I want to listen to JS Bach. And I mean like spend a year, different bit of music every day, in some logical order, maybe with some short reading to guide me through each piece. Where should I start? How should I go about it?
@danrebellato Someone else will have to guide you through the choral & keyboard rep, but several weeks should be spent with the unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas, and the cello suites. And listening to both modern & period practice recordings!

@danrebellato Look for the BWV number [catalog of all of Bach's works]. That might help you pursue in some lind of order 😊

Personally I started with the Harpsichord concertos, but I was a weird kid 😁

@danrebellato slightly at a tangent here but have you seen/read Bach & sons by Nina Raine? I liked it a lot.
@danrebellato this is a bit of a cop out answer to an excellent and difficult question, but I might consider grabbing the undergrad music history textbook of the century (A History of Western Music, Donald Jay Grout, aka "The Grout") and using the index as a starting point. And do check out Jean Rondeau for some unbelievable contemporary interpretations of Bach.
@danrebellato P. S. The Grout is also a shining example of why I remove all dust jackets from my books.
@danrebellato ah, just thought to tag the @classicalmusic group. I bet some of those folks will have good ideas about this!
@danrebellato personally I’d start with a smallish piece and then in your reading and listening be inspired for where to jump to next. Rather than have a pre-planned order. But you’ll have to get more systematic as time goes on in order to visit the less-known pieces. If you want company for any of it, I run informal Zoom classes in Music Appreciation and JSB features a couple of times in the next few months.
@danrebellato o wow, what an incredible idea! Maybe starting with a book by James R. Gaines "An Evening in the Palace of Reason" and then following up with the music mentioned there? It's mainly about the clash of worldviews and beliefs between JS Bach and one of his sons, CPE Bach, and the story behind "Musical Offering".
I devised my Bach vs. Bach programme inspired by the book.
