I’m thinking of moving my account to med-mastodon as I’m just not seeing my medical colleagues posts, meaning I’m missing out on a huge amount of information and learning when compared with the bird site.

I’ve read lots, but still can’t work out - do I have to create my new profile first before moving or is it created during the process of moving? I would like to move rather than just redirect and I don’t want two accounts.

Thanks in advance! 🙌🏻 #MovingInstances

I’d like to be able to transfer followers and those I’m following 🤗
Or alternatively, does anyone know how I can see those I follow across the whole federation on Metatext or Mastodon apps? Currently, on the ‘Federated’ tab, Metatext shows me primary posts from lots of people I don’t follow,(rather than posts or boosts from those I do follow)
@DrLygo I’m learning too but what you describe here should be your ‘home’ timeline on MetaText.

@chriswalker thanks Chris. That makes sense. I was using the Mastodon app and opened to Metatext to see if it was simply that the Mastodon app doesn’t show a Federated timeline. It is showing me more from Metatext home, but nothing medical, despite the fact that I follow several medical accounts, who have posted when I look on their profiles. I’ll give it a bit longer on Metatext ‘Home’ and ditch the Mastodon app before moving I think!

Thank you!

@DrLygo No probs. One thing that caught me out on MetaText is the ‘Load More’ entry in the timeline - have you figured that out? Just in case you haven’t, occasionally there’s a ‘Load more’ entry in the timeline. Tapping that expands a bunch of posts that have been hidden for timeline ‘convenience’. Have a great day.
@chriswalker I just saw that! Sometimes three in a row 🤷🏻‍♀️ So I’ll keep clicking that until further notice. Thank you. And you have a great day too!
@DrLygo
The Home tab is where you should see anyone you follow. I'd try looking in the browser for comparison.
As for moving, you have to create the new account first. then you have to make the connection from both accounts. Followers get moved automatically, but this can take some time (hours?).
You can export a list of those you're following and import it on the new account. Same with bookmarks.
@indri that’s really helpful. Thank you! Great idea to compare in the browser version 🙌🏻
@DrLygo also not entirely obvious but the federated tab is showing you posts that "your instance" knows about, based on what other instances it has connected to or hashtags have been followed, this won't actually be "everything" everwhere.
I wonder if there's a decent description online that's going to be better than mine.
(aside: ditching the 'official' Mastodon app is worth doing anyway, since it lags behind all the others for features and functionality)
@DrLygo so if you're on instance A, and someone on instance B posts to a hashtag, instance A won't necessarily know about it unless it is already communicating with instance B (by relay or following someone)
Similarly it won't pull in historical information (at the moment)
(Having said this, my knowledge of how the subscriptions and message distribution works is still very limited I haven't fully understood how it's built yet)
@ivor you’re way ahead of me!

@ivor Your description is perfect! The thing is, if there are thousands on my domain and they each follow someone on a different instance. Then I’ll see a whole world of stuff that isn’t relevant to me, right?

I’m finding this more confusing than I should.

I honestly don’t know how I dress myself

@DrLygo yes exactly that, so it can be a good idea to be on a "niche" instance if you have a specific interest, although a bit of work if you have multiple interests.
What you can do on some clients (e.g. Fedilab that I use) is to subscribe to the local timelines on specific instances and you then have tabs for each.
Also it's definitely going to get a bit messy as the number of users climbs into millions and the instances 10s of thousands, it'll take a while for the apps and tools to catch up.
@ivor Eek! I think I’ll see how I get on with Metatext. Fingers crossed I’ll start seeing med posts!
@DrLygo I hope I can still seeing your pictures, they are fantastic
@damiansixx_ That’s so kind of you. Thank you! I’m very much learning but it’s one of my most relaxing escape activities alongside walking :)
@DrLygo I started doing photography 10 years ago, I’m still learning. Feel free to check some of the photos that I posted recently. You are doing super!

@DrLygo You have to create your new account first to be able to login and import the data of your old account.
This guide can help you:

And play it save, backup all data from your old account first as mentioned in the guide.

How to migrate from one server to another

With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless. Backing up Your Data Data export If you are moving to a new instance the first thing you will want to do is to get a backup of all of your data. Thankfully this process is painless with the Data Export tab under the “Import and Export” page.

@maha thanks. This seems to be outlining the ‘redirect’ option. But I think there’s an option to ‘move’ where followers automatically move too. The trouble is, it asks me for the domain address I’d like to move to, but I’m not sure if I have to create this first, or if it does so in the move process. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@DrLygo I haven’t heard about the move feature you mentioned. I also can’t imagine how an automated followers move should work because as your follower the information which of your account names I follow is stored in my own account and only I can change it. I.e. by visiting your new account profile. At least that’s how I understood the process.
Btw I wonder why you can’t see your med mastodon buddies. In my timeline I can see toots from the med instance 🤔

@maha The move option is in settings… 👇🏻

Re the lack of med post visibility - I’m sure it’s user error! (Mine, not the other med folks!)

@DrLygo Now I found this page too, I was looking in another menu of the settings. Well, as I see it, you have to create the new account first, then enter the handle of the new account here along with the password for your current account. I would give it a try after I created a backup of my current account as mentioned in the guide I sent you. Better safe than sorry.
@maha Agreed! I think I’ll give it a go with Metatext first and see if that shows me med stuff. The Mastodon app sadly didn’t meet my needs at all!
@DrLygo I deleted the Mastodon app after just 2 days and switched to Metatext. It’s much better from my point of view. You also can add multiple accounts there so maybe you can create a new account, add it to Metatext and see if you can see the med stuff before you actually start moving.
@maha Good call. So far, I can see more in Metatext but still not many med posts. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@DrLygo From which instance are they “tooting”? I follow some people from “med-mastodon.com” and “medibubble.org” and I can see their toots.
@DrLygo don't need to move unless you really want to. Use and follow hashtags that are relevant. You'll see and be able to follow lots of new people that way

@darkufo Thank you! I’ve been lazy and stuck to the first app I downloaded and I don’t think it’s fit for purpose quite yet. I haven’t worked out how to follow hashtags on it, so I’ll have a look at Metatext and see if that lets me do it.

Really appreciate the advice! 🙌🏻

@DrLygo No worries. If you're on Android Tusky is very good. Also I would suggest whilst setting up stuff like hashtags to use a computer and the full web version. Enable Advanced UI in the the settings and you can have multiple columns. You can then pin a specific hashtag as a column. I find lots of great people to follow using that method.
