ode to joy
@jrcarpenter Sometimes I tire of living in a consumer society.

@jrcarpenter I do despise the realization I am being sold to. Its an immediate turn off.

Unless I need the the thing or was somehow looking for that particular thing anyways..

My indifference becomes a "no" just for spite.

@jrcarpenter

I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed.

-Lloyd Dobler "Say Anything"

@jrcarpenter one of the reasons Thanksgiving was one of my favorite holidays. Just getting together, no gifts or expectations.
@jrcarpenter Hmmm seems familiar >.>
@jrcarpenter but now i'm being sold not being sold anything
@jrcarpenter
The joy of not being sold anything sounds like a great! I need to have it! How much does it costs and where can I buy it??

@jrcarpenter I really hope they stole the spray paint they used to make this
@jrcarpenter only selling traffic lights, but those are a public good and keep us safe 😁 🚦
@jrcarpenter oh where can I buy that artwork ;)
@jrcarpenter Pretty much the reason I went to Burning Man for a decade back when. There’s a palpable relief from completely banishing consumerism.
@jrcarpenter which is why the #fediverse is such a sacred place, let's keep it that way😉
@jrcarpenter The main thing I love about Mastodon!
@jrcarpenter somehow this is gonna end up in a museum and cost thousands of dollars.
@jrcarpenter the only ad for mastodon you ever need. How much value do you actually place in the work / service of your local admin. If you have not already done so, find out how to support them financially and follow through.

@jrcarpenter

Black Friday sales have started. Avoiding them like the plague.

@jrcarpenter I’m of the retail sector in Australia continuing to try to Americanise us.
@jrcarpenter Selling anticonsumerism is the ultimate rush.
@dredmorbius Try raising anti consumers. ;^)
@jrcarpenter I couldn’t agree more!!
@jrcarpenter ‘I have nothing to sell and I’m selling it’ vibes in #London ? I’m guessing 🙂
@jrcarpenter Just look at all the stuff I didn't buy this Black Friday!
@jrcarpenter Best use of advertising hoardings was at Clapham Common tube station a few years ago, when they replaced all the ads there with pictures of cats.
@jrcarpenter I saw this on an under pass by London bridge, maybe 17 years ago and took a photo which is now all faded. I wish I could find the negative (yes it was the old fashioned way!)
@jrcarpenter that’s what I’m talking about! Yessss!
@jrcarpenter I actually enjoy being sold to. What I hate is being marketed at.
@jrcarpenter I love this! Somebody should print this on a t-shirt and I would totally … you know what, never mind.

@jrcarpenter Please add alt text to your images.

Picture of an empty street billboard from across the road, someone has written at the bottom "The joy of not being sold anything". Two people walk from the right not looking at it.

@jrcarpenter Can I double boost this image?

@jrcarpenter

Can we add The Joy of Not Having To SELL Anything?

Or is that now unthinkable…

Where I lived in The Bruce (Peninsula, a UN designated bio-reserve) the richest folks literally sold the ground beneath their feet to adorn lobbies of folks richer than them. Others sold their ground water…

It was forbidden to talk about this

@icymi_philosophy

@jrcarpenter I think about this a lot. How many spaces are plastered with sales pitches, consumerist propaganda.

There are greater evils in this world than advertising, and it is my whiteness which protects me from the worst of those and thus gives me the space to focus on this - but think of how differently people would live their lives if nobody was ever trying to sell them something.
