Few graphs of our heat pump running this morning

@kenbone @stevewebster56

Long runs today, I think I’ve dialled things in fairly good so far. #HeatPump #A2W

@kenbone @stevewebster56

For everyones info, the minimum input power draw from this #Daikin 11kW unit #Octopus supplied and installed seems to be ~900 (+/-25) watts, and I’ve found a minimum temp of ~33C to prevent cycling as per @paulkenny recommendations in the paper they produced that concludes the importance of dialling in the minimum emitter output:

and also similar suggestions from @petereastern as well

I was due to have the 9kW Daikin fitted (my measurements from gas usage showed peak load of ~8kW), but they fitted this and didn’t tell me the 9kW was out of stock……👎🏻

The units (9/11/14/16) from Daikin so so similar specs on paper, I’ve stuck with it as it’ll help with DSR going into the future.

I think we can call this the “Jonathan Waxman (from the bird site) oversized for #DSR by design”, strategy 😂 - context:

Jonathan Waxman on Twitter

“The sizing of heat pumps debate seems to me super important with important ramifications for both homes and for the whole power system. It also feels, to me at least, still unsettled with good arguments on all sides but maybe twitter isn’t the best forum for that discussion 😊”

@Stephencrown @paulkenny @petereastern @kenbone That shows some naivety from Octopus, fitting an oversize unit assuming it will invert enough. Looks as though you have nailed it though.

@paulkenny @kenbone @stevewebster56 @petereastern

Yeah, I like a challenge and to explore the upsides it can, if careful, present.

OctopusEnergy were a mixed bag, both really good and not so good stuff.

I just didn’t have the decent installer options locally unfortunately. (In fact locals won’t go near them unfortunately)

@paulkenny @petereastern @stevewebster56 @kenbone

A few of the positives:

1. They agreed to integrate with, and move to a new position, my 2018 #Mixergy tank…. (yes, that was mine that was being referred to by Nathan (@[email protected]) after contacting him) after initially quoting to replace it!! 😱

I’m so glad I spotted this (most people wouldn’t have) as it presents so much rich data, metrics and even just charge % info.

I still think it’s great for volumetric top ups even now

@kenbone @paulkenny @stevewebster56 @petereastern

2. They took out #UFH control, zone valve and pump to run open (they didn’t rebalance the loops or rads however 🤨 so I have done that to the best of my ability and to learn)

3. They fitted a 20L tank on the return only as a volumiser

4. They set it up with #WeatherCompensation / #OutdoorReset (I’ve adjusted the curve down since however) and thermostat load compensation/modulation

@petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 @paulkenny

5. Was cheaper than a new boiler replacement at £2k (+ £5k BUS voucher) (I had done a fair bit of prep work for this as well over the last few year to be clear)

@petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 @paulkenny

I was well prepared for this, having read an enormous amount, digested all the really valuable information and lessons learned/best practices from the bird site, YouTube and planned this with greater and greater detail/knowledge over 5 years or so.

I also understand “you get what you pay for”, so I’ve taken some of the things (such as poor pipework insulation outside that I’ll redo myself), on the chin.

@petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 @paulkenny

I would agree they are (my install was w/c September 26 2022) pretty immature so far, so I will be interested to see others views/opinions.

I’m just glad I’m off gas now! 😃

Thank you for everyone’s advice/guidance and knowledge sharing. It’s been invaluable.

@Stephencrown @kenbone @stevewebster56 @paulkenny Congratulations. Part of what I have enjoyed is knowing that I am being part of this big important journey we are taking together out of fossil fuels. It is a strange land for all of us and we are figuring it out together and accepting some lumps and bumps along the way! I sense a fellow traveller!

@kenbone @petereastern @stevewebster56 @paulkenny

Thanks Peter. Yes indeed

I see that “perfect” (which we all with good consciences strive for in our various industries) must not become the enemy of “good enough”

Decarbonisation via A2W or A2A heat pumps in the UK & across the world needs to scale as *fast as possible* with good enough performance without ploughing through the law of diminishing return boundary.

That’s why we need Octopus 🐙 Energy & all others to do well.

Moving from ‘Demand Side Response’ to ‘Intelligent Demand’

For the last sixty years, efforts to influence energy demand have been defined by (and limited to) the concept of ‘Demand side response’ (DSR). Now we have the opportunity to move to 'Intelligent Demand' - which could solve a whole host of energy issues.
