Organising events for friends and my local gaming community voluntarily is stressful. I often sit out of playing the events I run to balance play groups. I feel responsible for making sure everyone participating has a wonderful time often at the expense of my own enjoyment. I also feel guilty that my fun might come at the cost of another’s so it’s just easier to sit out. Still there is the reward of accomplishment that everything ran smoothly.

Honestly I often end up volunteering due to my interest in seeing my local game community grow with interesting events. Events I would like to enjoy but aren’t happening for various reasons. I also grew up with the mantra of “if you want something done well, do it yourself”. So stepping up just makes sense to me.

How do others feel about being volunteer organisers? How do you balance responsibility and personal enjoyment? I’m struggling to find a balance.

@BoredGameDesigner definitely feel this. I'm not sure I've ever found a balance in it, but I also trend towards preferring to organize events over attending them. Like at our local public game nights, I'll never go unless I'm the one teaching a game.
@BoredGameDesigner That's a good example of balance I guess - you still get to organize/host, but it's a small enough thing that you can still take part. Generally if it's a larger event (> 10 ppl) there's enough going on that I'm just content making sure it goes smoothly over participating
@ofdiceandmen Satisfaction in a job well done is both a benefit and a hindrance for me. Sometimes I’ve got to remind myself it’s ok to enjoy something without helping! Thanks for your insight. I might try doing some smaller sized events to participate! 😊
