Apparently, it's really hard to exit this bus.

#vim #linux #unix #bsd

@atoponce
also no steering wheel. just HJKL
@atoponce The first time you get on that bus, if you didn't pick up the instruction brochure at the bus stop, you can't figure out how to sit in a seat.
@atoponce πŸ˜‚ I had a prof in college who was a whiz in vim. It was scary to see how good he was in it. Concert pianist-level stuff lol
@atoponce lol... Ya all I use is vim now but ya... I've shut down a machine to exit VIM before. :-)
@atoponce It's not hard to exit the bus but a lot of people have trouble with it…

@atoponce

Not as long as you have a working colon.

@atoponce No more standing in the bus because lack of free seats:

:%s/OTHER_PASSENGER/ME/g

@atoponce Need a ticket to get into insert mode.
@atoponce Hit the button = : … q = Quit … ! = even if not paid…
@atoponce ZZ or :wq! just in case someone asks.
@atoponce emacs FTW! πŸ˜ƒ
@lmamakos Generally Not Used, Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping
@atoponce I was so happy back in the day when the #UNIX I was using got SMP support. Then #emacs had a CPU of it's very own.
@lmamakos @atoponce Yes, Emacs is a great operating system, with an advanced windowing interface, and in parenthesis, a ton of features #emacs
@m33 @lmamakos I heard EMACS has a text editor now! πŸ˜‰

@m33 @atoponce
I used to use mh-e inside of email as my mail user agent for years, back when I used MH at the shell for email. And gdb-mode and lots of other things.

The most bizarre was the editing mode I configured for UNIVAC 1100 assembly code; came in handy for the UNIVAC TCP/IP stack that I was an author of back in 1981 or so and we got FTP working on the mainframe..

emacs: one-stop shopping for all your computing needs.

@lmamakos @atoponce that was a complete workshop indeed.
I got into emacs when learning lisp (of course). Sometimes emacs keyboard shortcuts fires for no reason in my vscode or word

@atoponce
If there's a problem:

:help!
E478: Don't panic!

@atoponce use your colon, man - you'll be out in no time
@atoponce somebody is going to need to explain bc the IT guy at my old work's name is Vim lol
@atoponce French people know to exit at the back... #frenchNerdsWillGetTheJoke
@atoponce Oh gods that's so geeky πŸ‘’πŸ“΄πŸ˜…
@atoponce but when you do, your plates are squeaky clean
@atoponce Just <escape>:q!<enter> to leave at any point (without your luggage). #vim
