I guess I‘m gonna dip my toe into the #urbanfantasy genre next and try some #dresdenfiles
Not sure what to expect, but my first guess (and hope) is something like Hellblazer.
#fantasy #fantasyliterature
@Weltraumhirsch i love urban fantasy. For me it's probably the popcorn entertainment that soap operas are for others or something ☺️ but even if I'm very, very benevolent with the genre, I never warmed to Dresden. Not even halfway through the first book. I'm curious how you like it.
@Nerdperle what can you recommend? I find it hard to discover something that is not vampire/ werewolf romance. That’s not what I am looking for 😅
@Weltraumhirsch I would still recommend the classic: Ilona Andrews „Magic“-series. There, romance is more of a side effect. If you want a bit of SciFi, too, then you could get happy Sith the „Innkeeper“-books.
@Nerdperle thank you!
But the covers are really something else 😅
@Weltraumhirsch First: Don‘t start with the „hidden legacy“-Books! I love them, too, but there are the most „fucks per page“ in all Ilona Adrews-Books 🤪 and then just look at the german covers! They are all way better than the originals 😊
@Nerdperle ok, but maybe my understanding of #urbanfantasy is entirely different from what it actual is. I always thought of it as a contemporary story with fantastic elements, not necessarily magic (in fact I don’t like that much 😅), but small supernatural elements. Maybe I am just looking in the wrong direction and should go for dark fantasy instead? Most of it looks like romantic fiction 🥶
@Weltraumhirsch I don't know all the books of the genre, of course,but most i read were set in modern day times and came with lot of magic and for me there are three categories: 1. Female author names and there is a lot of sex and boring stories, 2. Female author names and there is little sex, some romance but cool stories and 3. male author names and I find the stories mostly flat. matter of taste. Maybe Kevin Hearne with his "Iron Druid" is still something to try? Friend of mine loved them.
@Nerdperle thanks! I want 4. female author, good story, no romance, creative worldbuilding 😁
@Weltraumhirsch when I'm one day finally done with my book, you'll get a copy without asking 🤪
@Weltraumhirsch @Nerdperle Sorry to butt in, but #UrbanFantasy is my favorite.🤓Sounds like you want some older UrbanFantasy (before everyone jumped on the bandwagon) and to avoid ParanormalRomance (new couple each book). The Patricia Briggs #MercyThompson series is great with a little romance but very slow burn. Richard Kadrey's #SandmanSlim is darker but good. ML Brennan's #GenerationV has minimal romance and a slacker hero.
@Weltraumhirsch @Nerdperle A slight variation on #UrbanFantasy is what I think of as period fantasy, like #steampunk . #CharlaineHarris who wrote the Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood books has the #GunnyRose series about a woman gunslinger in an alternate America that includes magicians.
@kmpuzzled right! Steampunk! I have a few books! From Westerfeld (Leviathan) Boneshaker by Cherie Priest and a book called Worldshaker...all here, not read yet. Thanks...I am really a bit lost cause I guess I always had a wrong expectation of the genre? But I really haven't read much fantasy...I was more a Sci-fi and Horror guy, but want to discover new stuff
