This account is verified through my website and Fedified.

I also currently have control over chanimal on this same instance as well as chanimal at kolektiva social, eldritch cafe, tech lgbt, fediscience org, mstdn science, mastodon world, and mas.to.

It’s easy to impersonate here. If you see anyone using the chanimal handle elsewhere, or any other handle claiming to be me, it’s not me.

Any account I am actively using will be verified through a link on my website.

@chanda just curious and still learning, I assume someone could create an account on a different Mastodon instance using the same handle/username but with the different domain/instance. Is that accurate? Or does the username get “reserved” across all Mastodon instances?

@joelbarrett @chanda Yes people can do that.
However theres a big caveat with that. There are standards generally expected of mastodon instances , which includes not allowing abusive accounts, which obv includes impersonations of other users.

If an instance permits it, theres a very solid chance they'll get rapidly de-federated. Which puts a very strong grass roots pressure on mastodon instance administrators to stamp out abusive and impersonation accounts.

@chanda @shayneoneill That’s what I thought. It doesn’t make sense to create the same username across all Mastodon instances. Besides never being complete, it’s just a waste of time and server resources. Kind of like trying to get the same email user name on all the different email servers. Thanks.
