Let's go for the #30DayMapChallenge 2022!
I'll push all my entries in this thread. I'll do my best to do the full 30 days! But it's pretty intense, so maybe some skips or republishing of past projects… We'll see!
Here is the list of themes by @tjukanov
#30DayMapChallenge - 1 - Points
Viewpoints in metropolitan France
Source: OpenStreetMap
Tool: QGIS

Starting small and abstract. I work everyday on a big spatial analysis platform with intricate datasets, I guess I craved some simplicity :)

Anyway, Grenoble seems to be the French capital of viewpoints. Well played Alsace too!

#30DayMapChallenge - 2 - Lines
Contour lines of Passy and south part of the Désert de Platé (Haute-Savoie, France)
Source: the impressive RGE Alti 1m by IGN
Tool: QGIS

Love the exquisite palettes built into QGIS!

I spent my last summer holidays there. The highlight was a long hike to the plateau, first climbing this very steep cliff.
Stunning view from the top!

#30DayMapChallenge - 3 - Polygons
Street plan of the Plaza del Ejecutivo, in Mexico City
Source: OpenStreetMap (ODbL)
Tool: QGIS
Other worthy candidates for this kind of geometrical map: Palmanova (IT), Grammichele (IT), Neuf-Brisach (FR) and probably a lof of crazy US city plans.
#30DayMapChallenge - 4 - Green
Street trees of Paris
Source: OpenData Paris
Tool: deck.gl + MapLibre
#30DayMapChallenge - 5 - Ukraine
2 colors topographic map of Ukraine
Source: Copernicus Digital Elevation Model (European Space Agency)
Tool: QGIS
Difficult theme today… No way I could make something about the war as good and respectful as the maps from some newspaper cartographers.
I realized I wasn't even familiar with what the country looks like physically. So, a topo map, even if it looks like an easy way out.
I don't feel very confortable with the coloring either. As the scale is showing I had to "cheat" to balance the colors, but that is ok.
It just made me think I would never do a blue-white-red map of France, and not just because it would look ugly :D
#30DayMapChallenge - 6 - Network
Oldie but goodie. Map of Paris metro/RER network, in the style of vintage lightbulb-based interactive maps installed in metro stations.
https://bbecquet.net/projects/pili/
Sources: OpenData Île-de-France - OpenStreetMap background tiles.
Tools: Node.js for data transformation, Leaflet, JS graph library jKstra.
#30DayMapChallenge - 7 - Raster
Relief shading on old map of Cairngorms and Aberdeenshire, animated. Inspired by Scott Reinhard's work.
Sources: 1929 paper map, John Bartholomew & Son Ltd. - NASA SRTM DEM.
Tool: QGIS + Terrain Shader plugin
The most complicated part was probably getting a crisp and flat enough photo of the map.
I bought it in a bookshop in Hay-on-Wye, among other marvels of the same era. If I had a pub, it would be a carto pub and they would be on the walls.
#30DayMapChallenge - 8 - Data: OpenStreetMap
Map of the Aran Islands, Ireland, a place dear to my heart.
Source: OpenStreetMap (ODbL)
Tool: QGIS
#30DayMapChallenge - 9 - Space
Earth's observatories and telescopes.
Source: OpenStreetMap, background tiles by CARTO
Tool: http://deck.gl + MapLibre
deck.gl

WebGL-powered visualization framework for large-scale datasets

9 - Space - 30DayMapChallenge

Web site created using create-react-app

#30DayMapChallenge - 10 - A bad map
Global warming as seen by bad journalists and most weather reports.
This was painful 😬
#30DayMapChallenge - 11 - Red
Volcanoes and tectonic plate boundaries
Sources: https://volcano.oregonstate.edu/volcano_table and https://github.com/fraxen/tectonicplates
Tool: deck.gl
Volcano Table

Volcano World
#30DayMapChallenge - 12 - Scale
Comparison between the longest and shortest rivers (fr: "fleuves") in France
Sources: OpenStreetMap, background tiles by MapTiler
Tool: QGIS
Bonus travel tip: Veules-les-Roses is a very lovely place.
And it's not everyday you can say 'I walked this whole river from source to sea! It took me 15 minutes.'
#30DayMapChallenge - 13 - Five minute map
Took me 5 minutes to change the color scheme and data source of my tree map from day 4.
Sources: OpenStreetMap & CARTO tiles.
Tool: Deck.gl + MapLibre
#30DayMapChallenge - 14 - Hexagons
Number of honey bee colonies in the U.S., by state.
Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture
Tool: QGIS
I know it's a rather bad map (hard to read, not enough color contrast, not the most efficient way to present the information), but with the theme I couldn't resist making something with honeycombs.
#30DayMapChallenge - 15 - Food/drink
Takeaway fish and chips in the British Isles (there are obviously some missing, probably not entirely tagged).
Source: OpenStreetMap, background tiles by CARTO.
Tools: QGIS + deck.gl + MapLibre
My favorite one: that one in Portree, on the Isle of Skye, where I ate a delicious fish and chips under the snow while looking at an otter swimming in the harbour. Just had to fight strong with the seagulls and hooded crows :D
Aaaand this map marks the middle of the month, and I've made it until now \o/
We'll see for the second half, as there are more themes where I have no idea at all yet.
#30DayMapChallenge - 16 - Minimal
64x64 pixel art Isle of Mull
#30DayMapChallenge - 17 - Without a computer
Engraved map of the Aran Islands.
Tools: copper plate, burin, ink, printing press.
I think I entered the 30DayMapChallenge mainly for this reason: after 5 years of intaglio practice, stop procrastinating and finally try to make a map.
#30DayMapChallenge - 18 - Blue
Not much time nor inspiration today, so just the Earth's oceans in nice shades of blue
Source: Natural Earth bathymetry data
Tool: QGIS

#30DayMapChallenge - 19 - Globe.
Chalkboard globe with hand-drawn oceans and landmasses.

Some years ago I bought cheap deco globes and covered them with blackboard paint. I offered most and kept one and this is still one of my favorite objects.
I erased and redrew it for the challenge.

#30DayMapChallenge - 20 - "My favourite…"
My favourite road trip, in the Scottish Highlands. Especially the northern part between Lairg and Ulapool.
Sources: DTM from Automatic Knowledge, route data from OSM.
Tools: QGIS then deck.gl
#30DayMapChallenge - 21 - Data: Kontur population dataset.
Population of the Netherlands living below sea level
Sources: Copernicus DEM, Kontur population, background tiles CARTO/OSM.
Tools: QGIS and CARTO (I work there 🙂)
#30DayMapChallenge - 22 - NULL
Unpopulated areas in metropolitan France
Source: Kontur Population Dataset
Tool: QGIS
Nim - @bbecquet
#30DayMapChallenge - 23 - Movement.
An oldie: interactive map of migrating birds https://bbecquet.github.io/bird-tracking.
Source: Global Biodiversity Information Facility @gbif, background tiles by CARTO.
Tools: deck.gl + React, Python for data preparation.
Bird tracking map

An interactive map of migrating birds from Northern and Eastern Europe to Africa and Middle-East.

For those interested, the source code is available here https://github.com/bbecquet/bird-tracking.
And I wrote a small blog post about it https://bbecquet.net/articles/2022/05/bird-tracking-map/.

#30DayMapChallenge - 24 - Fantasy.
Bird's-eye view of a place I've visited three times in dreams. The 2nd time, I quickly drew a map because its geography was still vivid in my mind. This is a more sophisticated version, with names given afterwards.
Tools: India ink and watercolor.
#30DayMapChallenge - 25 - Colour Friday: 2 colours.
Occurrences of Black kite and Red kite.
Source: GBIF.org (Datasets: Milvus migrans https://doi.org/10.15468/dl.nabybr and Milvus milvus https://doi.org/10.15468/dl.r5cuhn)
Tools: Python & QGIS

#30DayMapChallenge - 26 - Island(s).
Fictional archipelago of my favorite islands.
Source: Land shapes from OpenStreetMap.
Tool: QGIS.
#30DayMapChallenge - 27 - Music.
An oldie I dusted off: map of traditional Irish tunes by place name. Interactive version here: https://bbecquet.net/projects/irish-tune-map
Sources: OpenStreetMap for places, @thesession for tune data.
Tools: Node.js, Leaflet
☘️ Irish tune map 🎶

#30DayMapChallenge - 28 - 3D.
Quick and dirty tests with the Qgis2Three.js plugin for QGIS. But I'm happy with my terrain gradient.
Sources: Great Britain DTM by Automatic Knowledge, based on OS data - IGN RGE Alti 1M.
#30DayMapChallenge - 29 - "Out of my confort zone".
Giving my first try to ObservableHQ and Bertin.js by @neocarto.
Turned out not to be uncomfortable at all :D. Very nice API!

#30DayMapChallenge 2022 - 29

Observable
#30DayMapChallenge - 30 - Remix.
Alternative ways of printing my engraved map of Aran Islands from day 17.
First with brayer and black ink only, like relief printing. Then inked in the normal intaglio way + brayer with translucent blue ink.
Aaaand this marks the end of the 30DayMapChallenge, and I survived it 🎉
Pretty intense experience but very interesting, I learned a lot!

#30DayMapChallenge Congratulations to every one who created maps during this month! So many great cartographers discovered!

Here is my own month summed up. My "Recent projects" view in QGIS looks nice too :)
I'll also write a retrospective blog article in a few days.
