What the h*ck’s a Hive, and why are people I want to follow going there instead of coming here, where I can follow them? I honestly hadn’t heard of Hive Social until today, and my anxiety is giving me problems about it because I only have enough social energy for one (1) avenue of interaction. I backed Mastodon, and advocated for it, and now I’m doubting myself.
Speaking to one of those account holders, they described Mastodon as “being sold as too complicated”, which is incredibly frustrating. It seems that Mastodon’s big selling point has also been it’s greatest drawback. The emphasis on federation has amplified the “separate servers” in people’s minds as something that will affect them far more than it actually will (the effect on most users turns out to be “effectively none”).
I feel like a big point of confusion comes from user names and “addresses”. Prior to joining Mastodon myself, I saw a lot of people asking for the full handle, and I assumed that would matter. This could have been a problem, as putting @ in front of a name when searching has never given me results, and I can definitely see people giving up there without trying just the username, and concluding Mastodon to be unusable.
There isn’t a point or a conclusion to all of this. I just needed to talk this through. Or at least shout it to the void.
@GhostWolfe your whole handle with the @ worked for me.
@scott I use apps, which seem a little behind the browser version, but I tolerate that because my brain is stupid and I already have too many browser tabs open.
