@clipperchip the scratch notes document im building this report that im working on right now is 62 pages, heh

i was planning on investigating costs and whatnot next week - i need to email my hosting provider and get an idea of what a fresh new server would cost, and based on some new writeups, possibly consider setting up an LLC or something, and then stand up a librepay/patreon/something.

@Viss Wouldn't it be considerably cheaper if you kept the instance private in the beginning? That way you can also iron out any issues that might pop up.

@clipperchip yes but all the extra overhead is in the event someone on the server does something fucked up and lawyers get involved. I havent decided to do it yet, and i havent decided if i wanna make it semi-private (like invite only) or open (i fully expect abuse if i did that). but it'll take some time to investigate.

@clipperchip really my only gripe with mastodon.social is that gifs and videos dont work. the lag is temporary and I'm happy to deal with it til the dust settles. though ive heard other instances are defederating away from it because its not defederating away from a handful of known nazi servers or something?

@Viss Yes, understandable. I wouldn't join such a large instance because problems like this are probably unavoidable.

@Viss Which is why I think a private/invite only instance would produce much less reason for headaches. That way you can hand pick those who join and be relatively sure they won't stab you in the back.

@clipperchip i tried this with a wire chatgroup and got stabbed in the back. massively. it resulted in a disinformation campaign run against me for like 7 months. and as such has damaged my own perception of my ability to judge character. which is another reason im hesitant.

@clipperchip in this case everything was great for years, then like .. 2 years later the guy goes completely apeshit without any rhyme or reason. the snapshot-in-time judgement call seemed easy. how can you tell that in 2 years someone is gonna turncoat?

@clipperchip not that i recognized at the time, but in retrospect they were everywhere and now i see them in many other folks. I know better now, but i still have ptsd over it.
