I get why naysayers and birdsite refugees both grouse about adoption hurdles. But I just found out I can:

-Follow hashtags and pin the column, same as on Tweetdeck

-Make lists or follow others' lists and pin them

-Follow a group of posters on a topic (like @bookstodon!).

And it seems like every day some amazing human is rolling out a new interface tweak or a new Thing you can do.

@raehodge @bookstodon oh, how do you follow hashtags? TIA

@lah Help a newblet out if I'm doing it wrong, but I found 2 ways to track a hashtag:

1. With a pinned column.

-Preferences > ✅ "Enable advanced web interface"

-Return to home screen, where your UI should look like Tweetdeck

-Click any hashtag you see. A new column appears all the way to the right, with the selected hashtag in the header.

-Click the 3-bar icon in the top right corner of that new column > "pin"

@lah

2. Search-n-Follow

- With Advanced Web Interface enabled, search the hashtag.

- A new column appears all the way to the right. In the header of the column, click the follow icon (that wee feller just to the right of the "< Back").

@raehodge Thank you so much. 🙏🏻 very helpful.
I remain somewhat confused by the Mastodon app - and the Toot community page (my server), which now looks like a twitter feed.
I’m not sure how to make the Toot community page my default - if that makes sense.

@lah Glad to be learning the ropes with friendlies! And I'm not sure either yet.

But I'm starting to think about the main instance I start with as though it's a dorm. Are you going to hang out mainly in your dorm for 4 yrs? Nah. You're gonna visit other dorms. Your friends are gonna visit yours,. And you can move to a new dorm any time if your dorm does something dumb or find one that sticks out.

I think that's why I like Advanced Web View. The columns somehow make it make sense for me.

@raehodge yes, I liked the Advanced Web View, too! Doema - that’s a great way to think about it. Lol.
@raehodge Let me try that again without typos: @raehodge yes, I like the Advanced Web View, too! Dorms - that’s a great way to think about it. Lol.
