I wrote about a terrifying case of online harassment against a student reporter, that's torn a college campus apart, and the increasing threats student journalists are forced to deal with https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/19/student-journalist-harass-arizona/
Online mobs are now coming for student journalists

The experience of an Arizona student journalist highlights the growing threat that online harassment poses to journalists, especially those just starting out.

@taylorlorenz Terrific reporting; thank you for bringing light to these issues.
@taylorlorenz super important story, Taylor- thank you!
@taylorlorenz So worrisome as my daughter is planning on studying journalism at university next year.
@taylorlorenz interesting piece. Not to trivialize reality with fiction, but it reminds me of a more modern (and terrifying) take on an episode of #gilmoregirls where Rory wrote a critical review of a ballerina in the college newspaper. Nasty messages left anonymously on her door. Not only does this show that Gilmore Girls lasts, but that harassment of journalists - including student journalists - is nothing new. Technology just makes the anonymity easier. It’s disgusting.
@taylorlorenz thank you for the story but it just made me so depressed about the people we’re breeding and no one stood for her; a situation I know you get
@taylorlorenz so disturbing! Why is there no legal recourse? Shouldn’t doxxing and death threats be punishable?
@taylorlorenz Terrifying indeed. And it's bigger than this case, as you point out. Thank you for this coverage. It's such an under-reported issue. I feel the fear from aspiring journalists around me. I am frequently part of conversations about online mobs and "people online ready to cancel you." And this tension is palpable among students seeing the need to have an online profile if you are in journalism & how social media is hurting mental health and is a source of fear due to threats.
@taylorlorenz Men, even young men, know what to do to terrify women by weaponizing their sycophantic fans. Hell, look at Elmo. No wonder they think it’s okay.
@taylorlorenz Great story. I ended up reading the original piece too. Man, I was a journalism student in the 90s, and can't imagine how I'd cope writing anything other than puff pieces today.

@taylorlorenz I was trolled relentlessly on Twitter from 2014 to 2018. The person threatened to slash my face & rape me. No one did anything. I posted about it on my blog lauraanntull.com/acting

Then when I finally snapped & wished a guy who had molested me harm, twitter banned my lauraanntull account. I think the person who banned my account is the person who attacked me for years.
