Settling in here, I'm starting to get a feel for the vibe difference between this and that other place. It's not that there are no jerks here. But the scale is more manageable, and that's everything.

It's like the difference between rolling your eyes at your racist uncle at a holiday dinner and discovering you booked the same hotel that's hosting a Klan rally.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about *your* uncle. Unless I am.
@mattblaze "if you can't identify the uncle in the room, then *you're* the uncle"
@mattblaze The biggest problem with the Racist Uncle is that he's probably someone's Racist Dad.
@mattblaze we can check with a private set intersection protocol
@mattblaze in my family that would be “my Aunt’s husband,” unfortunately.

@mattblaze I think, especially as things grow, the vibe will depend more and more on what instance you’re on, since that’ll be making the more macro moderation decisions.

Obviously, it’s important now, but I suspect if things dramatically scale up in users it’ll become *very* important

@ncallaway Yes, and it's not at all clear this can survive a massive scale-up. But maybe we can get 5-10 good years out of it.

@mattblaze @ncallaway I think it *could*, but it's going to involve a lot more small instances -- which will massively help the moderation load, as if you don't like the nazis just block them at the instance-level -- rather than a few, large instances.

Took me a couple of hours to install, which given the age^Wcomplexity of the machine it's living on isn't too bad. I haven't done an upgrade yet, though...

@mattblaze and the racist uncle is leaving early

@mattblaze I'm beginning to think that the federation of instances with their own rules is a better proxy for real life.

It's not practicing balkanization of the internet, it's just allowing for each community of people to have agency over what type of content to ingest or de-federate from - much like your ignoring your racist uncle and their boomer diatribes.

OTOH, running instances and the power that comes with that has a classist barrier to entry that needs addressing.

@mattblaze jerks go to the jerk instance for easy blocking
@mattblaze
I worry if this network grows, we will see a lot more of them here.
