After a week of using Mastodon, I think the feature I'd like to see the most is some way to restrict the service from showing me the same boosted post repeatedly.

For example, let's say I boost a post. I will see it in my timeline. A person I am following boosts it too. I see it again. Another person I am following boosts it as well. I see it again. And so on.

Ideally, once I boost it, it shouldn't come up in my home timeline again.

A relatively simple way to implement this: add an option available to any app (usually through the "..." link in the post) to "mute boosts of this post." That means I won't be able to see boosts of that particular post, but I won't have to mute the original poster or the person who boosted it.

It takes a bit more effort from the user, but I think it's still an improvement, and probably easier to implement than a fancier, automatic solution.

@gilhova
There is a "mute this post" option in that menu which should have that effect. It makes you pick or create a mute filter to add the post to in case you ever want to access it again. So I created a mute filter called "muted posts" that I add boosted posts to when I've seen them more than once or twice.

@keithjones I don't see that! Here's my menu on a boosted post. "Filter this post" doesn't work for what I want, as it gives me a menu where I can enter keywords, but doesn't let me filter just a specific post (I assume).

Maybe it's something that your server has, and mine doesn't?

@gilhova
Sorry, the "filter this post" option is there and can be used to mute it! Had the wording off.
@keithjones Huh, that's what I get for assuming! I will give it a try next time I see a repeated boosted post.

@gilhova

My app (Fedilab) does have "mute conversation" option (pictured below) and, unlike the "filter this post" option on the web, it didn't ask for confirmation or to add to a filter! So I just accidently muted this thread, and i may never see it again, because I don't see anywhere to find it in my settings! 😂 (Except I seem to still be able to see my own posts, which is how I got back here.)

@keithjones I have "mute conversation" as well, but it seems to only work on replies, not the first post of a thread!

Also, thank you for taking the time to give me a hand with this!

@gilhova Haha, no problem; hopefully in the end it is helpful. When I go into preferences -> filters, I see a filter I created called "filteredposts" and it tells me I've filtered 3 individual posts "3 individual posts hidden." The edit box you see when you choose "filter this post" should be letting you name a new filter? The web interface makes that somewhat clear. I don't see this option in Fedilab, though, which is weird.
@gilhova Sorry, I missed part of what you wrote... "filter this post" really should do what you want. You just create a filter to put the post in (every post has to be added to a filter) and then it goes away. You can find it again if you need by going into whatever filter you added it to. Like I said, I just have a "filtered posts" filter where I put all mine.
@gilhova Preferences > other > group boosts in timeline, although it only applies to recent boosts
@bethsobel @gilhova And that appears to be the default since it is recommended?
@rf_seattle @bethsobel Yes, I'm still seeing the same posts boosted in my timeline repeatedly, even with that feature on
