I am readying my coming night shifts by restarting TV series Fringe, which I was hooked on ever since episode one. It was like The X-Files, but with science instead of aliens.
And we all know science is waaaay spookier.

Lead character Oliva Dunham is kick-ass and her two sidekicks are pleasurable as well, with a good balance of weirdness and nerdness next to the yucky and creepy stuff.

Also, did you know the glyphs between scenes actually are a code that gave away clues to the next episode?

Made every episode a puzzle.

@hamsterhuey I loved Fringe! I felt like the first season was the most X-Files. And I didn’t care for it. But then I revisited the show and every subsequent season got better and better, eventually carving out it’s own mythology and story.

And, in retrospect, after watching all 5 seasons, the 1st season laid the groundwork for some of the later seasons. It was really tightly written show. I miss it.

@eatthelove Me too! Because it's such a good show I am rewatching it again atm. Such a joy.

What other series do you love watching?

@hamsterhuey I think the best current show we’re watching is Andor. I’m a casual fan of Star Wars but my husband is a HUGE Star Wars fan.

But I’m really impressed with the pacing and writing of it. It’s not just fan pandering. It is a fascinating intriguing story laying the groundwork for the whole Star Wars rebellion concept.

Other shows we’ve loved in the same vein as Fringe include:
Stranger Things
Dark
Severance
Russian Doll (1st season only)

@hamsterhuey what other shows have you watched that you love?

@eatthelove Carnivale, Continuum, Foundation, Game Of Thrones (except the last season), Heroes (loooved the 1st season), Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Mr Robot, Outer Range, Penny Dreadful (first series), The Sandman, The Expanse, Westworld, Babylon Berlin, Heartstopper, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, the 1995 Pride & Prejudice, Pushing Daisies, Our Flag Means Death, Sex Education, The Peripheral.

Amongst others. There is a whole list of Costume Drama, besides P&P and Penny Dreadful.

@hamsterhuey The Sandman was EXACTLY what I wanted from an adaptation! Slightly update but still true to the source material. Brilliant casting and so well done! I’m pleased that it got renewed for season 2.

Also, I hated the last season of Games of Thrones so much that I can’t watch the new show House of the Dragon. I think I was too traumatized by GoT’s last season. L

@eatthelove Same here! I tried, but the characters don't gel with me at all. George R. R. Martin oughta have concentrated on writing the last Song Of Ice & Fire books, instead of diluting his own world building.
@hamsterhuey I never read the GOT books. But the tv show was quite engaging and the world building was gorgeous. Until the last season. Where nothing made sense and all the characters suddenly went bonkers crazy and COMPLETELY out of character. It was mad chaos. And not in a fun way…

@eatthelove Yeah, there is a reason for that; it covered the area where Martin has not written the books yet... so the storytelling went haywire.

The books are hella long, a crazy amount of characters, but they were fun to read. Can't wait for the rest of them, if he ever gets around to it.

@hamsterhuey yeah. It was pretty obvious the point where they were using the source material…and then they weren’t. The pacing is it shifted drastically in the show…
@eatthelove Co-sign on The Sandman. Even though I never got into to comics, so I can't draw comparisons.

@hamsterhuey oh, I was a huge fan of the Sandman comics back when they came out. And I’ve really been anticipating the show, ever since it was announced AND knowing @neilhimself was going to be involved.

I have my fingers crossed that they are able to adapt ALL the comic arcs. AND do a spin-off of the Death comics. I felt like Kirby Howell-Baptiste absolutely nailed Death’s personality from the comics. Excellent casting.

@hamsterhuey I’ll be honest that I loved the first season of Heroes but I could watch any subsequent seasons. I think I gave up halfway through season 2.

I ABSOLUTELY love Our Flag Means Death! I’m so glad with the HBO/Discovery merger that it still got a renewal for season 2.

Pushing Daisies is also one of my absolute favorites though! Have you seen Wonderfalls?

@eatthelove Wonderfalls is on my list. I think my fiancee will love it as well, though, so I am keeping that to watch together.

@hamsterhuey so I absolutely loved Wonderfalls when it came out. It’s by Bryan Fuller. So the same sensibility as Pushing Daisies, though a little less whimsical and hyper real.

I will say the lead character is pretty Xennial. I loved her but some folks didn’t care for her as much. But I really enjoyed it. Plus I’m a big fan of Lee Pace. He’s the brother. Actually the whole cast is charming.

@eatthelove Pace was actually the reason I watched Daisies and Fuller the reason I watched and ADORE Hannibal. Still one of my favest series EVER.

@hamsterhuey oh yes! He’s great. And I loved Hannibal, but it got a little too dark for us. We ended up not watching the last season. We should really go back and watch it!

The lead of Wonderfalls is the actor who plays Dr. Alana Bloom in Hannibal. She was a TOTALLY different character in Wonderfalls. It’s was a little startling to see her in Hannibal actually. But it just showed how much range she has.

I’m a big fan of Bryan Fuller as well.

@hamsterhuey I have not seen the Jonathan Strange series. I loved the book. Is the adaptation good?
@eatthelove It is. Great acting, beautifully shot. A total joy, to me.
@hamsterhuey Jonathan Strange was on my list of shows to watch when it came out! I was so excited about it. But somehow I totally forgot about it until you just mentioned it. I’m going to have to track it down now…
