We've closed up our Twitter account. A platform whose owner uses it to bait violent anti-democratic conspiracy theories and engage in overt anti-semitism is not a place compatible with our mission to inform, create accountability, and improve democracy.
@GovTrack Thank you for all the work you've done over the years! I've learned a lot about my local politicians thanks to you.
@GovTrack thanks for being here!
@Gabygoldstein @GovTrack Yes! I didn't even know you existed on Twitter, so am happy to read you here.
@GovTrack Welcome!
The popup on your site still says "Follow @GovTrack on Twitter for posts about legislative activity and other information we’re tracking, and some commentary."
Also, I'd love to hear about your decision to join this instance vs run your own.

@sparr @GovTrack

Re 'your decision to join this instance vs run your own.'

The public square is where I expect to find all these kinds of accounts. It is a gathering place

@SusanKraemer @GovTrack What are you referring to as "The public square" here?
@sparr Fixed now, thanks for pointing it out. The decision to join this instance was just that it was the fastest to get going, since we can always change instances later.
@GovTrack Omigosh, thank you, thank you! πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™
@GovTrack thank you! Welcome!
@GovTrack props on not giving free content and metric growth to a trash place

Please boost this. If you deactivate/delete your Tw*tter account, your @ handle will be publicly available in 30 days. The chances that you will be impersonated with no recourse is very high! Don’t do it - especially if you had a fairly popular account. To wipe things, deactivate your account, then go to bird site /login and reactivate it. All of your followers will be gone. Now lock the account and let it rot. @semiphemeral is a great tool for wiping data, including DMs. #twittermigration

@GovTrack bravo. The right decision. Welcome!
@GovTrack good for you πŸ’ͺ Welcome
@GovTrack Thank you. Hoping others will follow your example.

@GovTrack
OMG I heart you.

Btw, you closed out my account ages ago, and I miss the updates on my legislators. Help?

@GovTrack

Thank you for standing up for decency and your principles. I am seeing a lot of good people migrate away from Twitter / Elon.

Thankfully, all of us still have a community where we can communicate.

@GovTrack thank you. I’m going to grab my data and leave.
@GovTrack I closed mine when I got this. I don’t have hateful tweets and I could not see the tweet that so offended anyone but I decided to delete the app but not my account. I don’t know or trust whatever is happening so just don’t want to fund him in any way. Give them all the bird. I had to get past these screens and if there was security, I’d trust it. There’s no damn security and it’s a free for all hate generator now. I wish all would leave immediately and shock them all.
@GovTrack I deactivated my Twitter account yesterday, the moment I saw the news that Elon Musk had reinstated that vile sociopath Donald Trump. Today, I started a Mastodon account. I want no part of the Twitter dumpster fire.
@GovTrack Hope you are able to delete your twitter account in such a way that no bad actor can impersonate you now ou're gone there (I forget the details, but sure you can find how)
@GovTrack Just a note, but within 30 days your Twitter handle is made available for others to use. If you've closed it, then it might be open to misuse in future. A better idea is to delete all content and just let the account fester.
@delimiter We didn't close the account. We just made it private. (You could have checked this yourself with a few seconds of effort.)
@GovTrack It was meant as friendly advice. Nice response.
@GovTrack there is a way to be verified, and that is to post a link to your website here, then link back with the html tag rel=β€œme”. Its explained further in this article: https://opensource.com/article/22/11/verified-mastodon-website

@GovTrack well done. I've just done the same.
@GovTrack update the pop up to link here, since you’ve gone protected?

@GovTrack

Well you bait anti conservative mis information so you're exactly the same.

@GovTrack Risk of impersonation; some experts are recommending deactivate the account to dump the follows and followers, then reactivate, make private and inactive forever https://aus.social/@thedragstate/109377827512403023

@GovTrack say no more(that means i agree with you)πŸ‘
@GovTrack πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
@GovTrack if it were for the nefariousness of the owner, you should also stop tracking the US government 🀭
@GovTrack Please move to a different server, though. A number of servers are starting to block Mastodon.social as it is nearly unmoderated due to its size. Lots of people simply won't be able to see your posts.
@Crell Yep, that's something for us to consider. This was really just meant to be a first place for us to land quickly anyway.
@GovTrack Yep, true for a lot of people. Fortunately you can migrate, even if (I think) posts don't go with you.
@Crell @GovTrack Yeah, posts are tied to their URL and cannot meaningfully be moved in the current standard. The closest you could get would be to post them again or boost them in the new place.
@GovTrack responsible choice πŸ‘
@GovTrack Much respect! You nailed it!

@GovTrack

Thank you. This is the way.

@GovTrack it was already like that
@GovTrack Good for you! Good for us!
@GovTrack I'm glad to see you have jumped to mastodon.
