I'm moving away from mastodon.social, looking for a new server.

What are the best ones?

I'm into #product / #prodmgmt / #productmanagement, #saas, #art, #space, and #science

Please boost for reach, would love to cast a wide net to learn! I bet others would find the thread useful too ✨

@bastow I am probably going to do the same thing. But I will be going to the Irish one: .ie. And I swear if you want Art and science you will find it there. (Not sure about the other stuff.)
@bastow https://hachyderm.io seems to be where a lot of coders & designers have ended up. I’ve noticed product people have scattered all over the place so far.
Hachyderm.io

Hachyderm is a safe space, LGBTQIA+ and BLM, primarily comprised of tech industry professionals world wide. Note that many non-user account types have restrictions - please see our About page.

@bastow The question is: what type of server would you like to find?
@bastow Looks like #Hachyderm hosts a fun tech bunch.

@bastow I don't have a particular recommendation, though I've been happy enough on my current host so far.

I wouldn't recommend fediscience dot org, as I've seen recent evidence that it's not adequately defederating from hate.

@bastow I like mastodon.art, they have a really nice code of conduct https://mastodon.art/about

@bastow interesting, why?

@ross https://retro.social/@ajroach42/109377815959702190

Something about it having crap moderation, and it being under threat of suspension? No idea what that actually means, but it also feels way too generic for me.

I want to get out of the main party room 😂

Andrew (R.S Admin) (@[email protected])

Moderation announcements: #mastoadmin We've silenced journo.host. I'm going to leave it at silence for a few days so that the few people our members follow to have a chance to migrate away and post about it. I haven't suspended mastodon.social yet, because there are just So Many people there who don't know any better but their recent moderation decisions are unforgivable. If you're #newhere or not, and are on mastodon.social, find somewhere with better moderation policies to migrate to. Let me know if you need help. I'll be glad to provide it.

@bastow thanks, agree there’s a big difference in the now, next, later when moderation is by the sysadmin; and norms and conventions haven’t settled. My use is less about the server which is why I asked. Portability is yet a feature.
@bastow I'm enjoying https://hachyderm.io. It seems pretty grounded. Run by @nova

@bastow I've moved to hachyderm.io, having noticed a few fellow members of the bird diaspora moved here.
@bastow ooh please let me know what you find. I’m into all those things too :) 🤞
@bastow what's the actual difference? (Newbie here) I went with masto.ai purely for brevity and ease of communicating it.
@Scully that's one of the factors I'm considering 😂
@bastow hachyderm.io is being managed beautifully.
@bastow maybe https://merveilles.town but not sure how difficult it is to get an account.
Merveilles

Revel in the marvels of the universe. We are a collective of forward-thinking individuals who strive to better ourselves and our surroundings through constant creation.

@bastow I’m on Mastodon.world. Happy here so far.
@bastow
You can try social.coop, chaos.social, mastodon.art, astrodon.social, mastodon.ie
@mattpotter
@bastow for #space I am on astrodon.social and universeodon.com.
@bastow There's UK specific ones (I've just moved from .social to https://mastodon.org.uk ), but there's also https://mastodonapp.uk/about and also https://know.me.uk/about : for ADHD there's https://neurodifferent.me/about and for general techy stuff I've currently got accounts on https://hachyderm.io/about for general tech stuff ( @nova seems brill!) and https://functional.cafe/about for general programming stuff.
Mastodon.org.uk

General purpose mastodon instance

@bastow does your exposure affected by which server you choose to register with? My understanding is that your server just determines where your stuff is hosted and you have access to posts on all other servers (unless the server has banned your server for some reason)
@bastow @tomalo There is one for product management, I'll send you the link when I have it.
@bastow @tomalo it's productmgmt.social, but I think this one is fairly new
@bastow I am on mstdn.party. It's been fine so far. Can't say I joined it for any particular reason other than I liked the idea of a party. 🥳
@bastow hachyderm.io is a good one, as are lots of others. Nova is a great admin and lots of great folks are there.
@bastow i just moved from mstdn.social to indieweb.social and it seems pretty cool — haven’t found a product-oriented instance yet

@bastow I can't vouch for any of these but here are some decent-looking instances I've spotted from my follows:

ART:
https://mastodon.art

TECH:
https://hachyderm.io
https://tech.lgbt
https://techhub.social

SCIENCE:
https://fediscience.org
https://sciencemastodon.com
https://sciences.social

I'll update if I come across anything else!

@bastow I've been very happy with sauropods.win -- all sorts of science and artwork there, not just dinosaurs (tho there is a lot of cool dinosaur & paleontology art/discussion, too!)
@bastow you may find this site useful: https://instances.social/ Once you get past the wizard, you can switch to advanced mode to sort/filter the list by size, uptime, activity, connectedness, etc. You can also search by keywords.
Mastodon instances

@bastow if you love tech stuff Twit.social is the instance for Twit.tv. It’s Leo Laporte and lots of tech guys that yap up what average everyday things are going on in the world of technology, how to use Microsoft’s and how to use Apple products. Twit.tv is basically The View for nerds. I turn it on and watch it for hours.
@bastow I’m on hci.social because who would I trust to run the server responsibly if not HCI researchers :)
