Testing the LaTeX functionality. \(e^{2\pi i} = 1\) and \[ \hat f(\xi) = \int_{\bf R} f(x) e^{-2\pi i x \xi}\ dx.\]

@tao
Ah. That didn't work.

But, what an entrance! Cosmo Kramer couldn't have done better. NICE!

@Heterokromia @tao it works if you view it on the web interface to the mathstodon instance.
@tao is this a mathstodon exclusive? Lol
@josiah @tao Yeah, only Mathstodon and a few other instances have Mathjax enabled. (https://scholar.social is the other one I know of).

@JordiGH

@fosstodon woulb be possible to have Mathjax switch on?

@JordiGH @josiah @tao Let’s get this @paulgp We can pony up some $\text{$}$ if needed :D
@ivanwerning @JordiGH @josiah @tao lol I’m not sure my host can do this. It would require a pretty large fixed cost investment bc I think mathstodon has a forked mastodon version
@paulgp @ivanwerning @JordiGH @josiah @tao sounds like you need an #RA — which of these tenured professors will volunteer

@ben_golub @paulgp @ivanwerning Oh, and this too, I think.

Anyway, you don't even have to do pick out the individual changes, you can just grab the Mathstodon code wholesale from the fork at the desired branch.

@JordiGH @ben_golub @ivanwerning I don’t manage any of the backend (I use masto host) so this is just a non starter at the moment
MathJax v3 support · christianp/mastodon@7b0659c

MathJax is loaded from the URL /MathJax - you'll need to get a copy and set nginx to serve it. I cloned [email protected]:mathjax/MathJax into /srv/www/MathJax, and then added the following to my ...

@tao is this only on mathstodon.xyz?

... shoot I might have to go there... dammit.

@futurebird @tao Yeah, only Mathstodon and a few other instances have Mathjax enabled. (https://scholar.social is the other one I know of).

@JordiGH @tao I've probably annoyed our admin enough for one day, but putting this on my list of things to start sadly moaning about in the coming days.

I don't know why anyone would want to be an admin. My god.

@futurebird @tao I know LaTeX is supported on mathstodon.xyz and qoto.org, but I assume that there are others.

@tao

It works... Not from a 3rd party server (e.g. mastodon.online) though.

@fargolo @tao Indeed.
I have learned a New Thing. MathML is not in/on/at aus.social. This is perhaps a reason to move?
@Heterokromia @fargolo Yeah, only Mathstodon and a few other instances have Mathjax enabled. (https://scholar.social is the other one I know of).

@JordiGH @fargolo Rightio. I see - NOT a reason to move. A reason to push 'show original' and a reason to volunteer at your local instance.

@tao I can see that my years of practice at reading and parsing latex source code directly are going to be useful. (Well, it's useful for my job, too.)

Ah, the days gone by of Ghostview and the dvips command.

@tao I see the source code, not typeset
@benblumson @tao It only renders on an instance with MathJax enabled, and only on the web interface.
@tao On the Android Mastodon app, tapping ...>Open In Browser displayed the toot on the mathsodon server, correctly typeset. That was a very helpful experiment!
@tao Screen shot for those from Mastodon instances without LaTeX functionality.

@tao looks good, except that the differential isn't upright ;) happy to see you on mathstodon!
@tao fun fact I had no knowledge or interest in LaTeX until I studied machine learning then having it in Google Colab was insanely valuable for taking notes. Blew the dust off maths I’d learnt a full quarter of a century ago 🤯

@tao Got to mention \(\tau = 2\pi\). I can't unsee it anymore.

Works for me on mobile web, but not on the app.

But, very glad that you are here.
