#RIPTwitter - Well it's not dead yet...

However I'm less interested in the life/death of Twitter and much more interested in the surge on Mastodon...

...and the potential of the whole fediverse going forward. Not only is there a different sense of community here, but also there's a lot of opportunity to innovate on our own terms -- and THAT feels like a lot of fun to me.

@mikegalsworthy I have a feeling that it's only because the numbers are still comparatively low, once the mob comes over ...

@TallBaldDesi @mikegalsworthy

I am worried about 'nasty' arguments and groups dog-piling you. I hope that never happens here.

@mikegalsworthy Decency in public discourse is the way forward. Had a look-in at Birdsite this morning and it's horrifying how it has descended to the depths of stupidity. I really feel for anyone who feels they *must* be there.

@punkhaiku @mikegalsworthy

Mastodon is really calmer and more polite. I just wish more news sites come in as well as Ukraine news.

@Annevelink_AD @mikegalsworthy I hear you, Anne - I really miss the Ukraine reporters.
@punkhaiku @mikegalsworthy
I just have stayed off Twitter.
Think it wise to leave a burning building at least until the fire is put out.
Just sayin.
@mikegalsworthy lots of opportunities and potential; a list of concerns too. Mastodon seems technically resilient and is based on a sound community. But it now must scale a long way in a short time - all while entering the spotlight for lawyers, governments and bad actors who were not aware of it before.
@mikegalsworthy One of the strengths is the local timeline on specific interest instances e.g. mastodon.radio which contains only #hamradio stuff. It allows special interest groups to have their own thing but still be connected to the federated whole.
@mikegalsworthy β€” One thing I think we can do to help try to preserve the better atmosphere here is to be gently encouraging to folks to use the CW wrapper feature for posts which might irk, vex, upset, or trigger people; I’m seeing a lot of what looks like auto-cross posts from Twitter boosted into my feed, and it would be a shame if that ended up quickly turning this place into the kind of polarised politicised bear-put folks have fled.
@simon @mikegalsworthy totally agree. I about to start unfollowing/muting auto-cross posters - esp. those that bring the bile and invective with them. I don't want it. Also, I'm hardly going to engage with autoposts from the other place, because it means that person isn't here.
@vermisstpfarrer @mikegalsworthy - indeed; I'm starting nicely asking a selection of individuals (and organisations) who are being boosted into my feed but if it becomes clear they think they're in a write-only medium I'll start unfollowing the folks boosting them.
@simon @mikegalsworthy when you do a content warning, please use a descriptive warning, so people can know before they click "Show more" whether it's something they want to read. A news account I follow uses warnings like "CW: mention of death", which could be about anything involving someone dying. A more helpful warning could be "Ukraine war development, mention of death" or "House in Toronto explodes, mention of death".
@pwyllgarno @simon @mikegalsworthy Content Warning… The protocol is for any political or other content that others might find objectionable to initially only display a brief summary. Any one who’s interested clicks to read.
@pwyllgarno @mikegalsworthy When you’re in the toot compose wi@dow you can see the letters CW alongside the other things β€” if you click CW that essentially lets you add a subject to you post which hides the main content of it, letting people click if they want to read it or scroll past without reading if it might irk, vex, upset, or trigger them.
@simon @mikegalsworthy
The nice thing about CWs is that you can also use them as headlines or teasers, or just to truncate a long post. I recently saw the suggestion of thinking of a CW more as a content wrapper rather than a warning.
CWs allow others to engage with a post on their terms rather than to have scan/scroll past. Or having to unfollow the accounts who don't use CWs often enough.
CWs are really great to use. So useful.
@mikegalsworthy yep loving this place. Love the fact there are no ads and the lack of bots/trolls
@mikegalsworthy Mastodon is much calmer and gentler. Nice.
@mikegalsworthy #riptwitter Its sort of undead....I wonder if it is a Vampire or a Wherewolf? If I was twitter, I would be a Wherewolf. A Wherewolf can kill a Vampire. Did you know that? I learned it is a critical issue in Senate race in Georgia.

@Breathe @mikegalsworthy 🀣🀣🀣

Walker is sooooo crazy!

It's both hilarious, and terrifying at the same time. He could be a US senator next year!!!

@mikegalsworthy

True, more subject experts have moved here. My Twitter feed only have a few left. But am not posting there because elon Musk gloats on its traffic

@mikegalsworthy
Innovative and maybe more organised
@mikegalsworthy I’m only watching twitter for when the lights go out there. So much more happening here!

@mikegalsworthy Hey Mike, I’m coming from Twitter and still like confused on the whole β€œFediverse” thing.

Though am excited about being on Mastodon.

@RobinGorbie @mikegalsworthy On the web, go to fedi.tips It is quite comprehensive
@wndlb @mikegalsworthy thanks Wendell. Appreciate the tip!
@RobinGorbie @mikegalsworthy Maybe this small glossary I just posted helps a little: https://social.cybre.town/@mcdutchie/109377520237583767
Martijn "McDutchie" Dekker (@[email protected])

Many new people think Mastodon is too complicated. I think that's in part because some of its jargon is obscure. "Server" = site "Instance" = site "Federation" = network "Fediverse" = network (fancier term) "Defederate" = block (a site) "Toot" = post "Boost" = repost The "Fediverse" is a bunch of websites, running various software, talking to each other using a common protocol – as with email. Much "complexity" can be fixed by speaking plain English. #Mastodon #accessibility #PlainEnglish

Mastodon
@mikegalsworthy still new here but first impression is that it’s just a nicer place. Hope it stays that way 😊
@mikegalsworthy just getting my feet wet... not sure if it really does have potential or just wishful thinking on my part. Rooting for the former.

@mikegalsworthy I keep thinking of credit unions and early Palm and Linux.

For-profit, exponential growth demanded, advertiser-satisfying, making engagement addictive, algorithm, you get a very different, harsher environment.

@mikegalsworthy more people are going to have to stand up mastodon servers if enough of us migrate from Twitter. It has great potentil to avoid the one rich guy controls everything scanario but scaling rapidly enough as the exodus from twitter continues is a real concern.
@mikegalsworthy it does feel like a #NewBeginning. Lots to learn but plenty of new opportunities to evolve and develop.
@mikegalsworthy ever thought of setting up a pro EU instance/server? A good place for us all to congregate.
@mikegalsworthy The federated server approach is fantastic.
It would be beneficial to have a server for the campaign to Rejoin the Single Market and all other #ProEU news and political focus?
@mikegalsworthy This is the right focus. Less about Twitter, more on federated social services like Mastodon. πŸ‘πŸ‘
@mikegalsworthy your energy has been outstanding Mike ... as Martin Luther King once said ... "I have a dream" ... it should be in your profile πŸ™‚
@mikegalsworthy Mastodon is slow to post new toots. It takes hours.
@mikegalsworthy Same Mike ! Feels like a better place.
@mikegalsworthy The twitterverse seems to be pulling itself apart as of late
@mikegalsworthy yes! I can almost sense and also see the opportunity. It is very innovating
@mikegalsworthy Quite. That and it seems, in general, better moderated, more considerate and so forth.
@mikegalsworthy I think if / when it gets established as a way forward, it will be essential for each organisation (universities, government. etc) to have their own server inhouse or outsourced just like it is with emails.. thats good thing as it will hopefully create jobs in a more organic way and identity verification will be easy based on the server someone belongs to thus reducing risk of online identity theft and such... I am an optimist. πŸ˜€
@mikegalsworthy it sounds like it needs a commerical model, a bit like the early days of the world wide web… so it becomes robust and scalable (rather than more pressure on a limited number of server admins)
@mikegalsworthy Me too. I have been on Mastodon for a few years (under a different account). I was really hopeful it would take off at some point because the idea of social media not being centrally owned is (IMO) incredibly beneficial for social media. I am so excited to see people discovering Mastodon and hopeful that large numbers of people start to understand we have a choice to use something truly controlled by the people.
@mikegalsworthy ya’ll have done and are doing some really great work. Talk about stress testing tech! Glad to be here.

@mikegalsworthy

Ever the scientist Mike and that's a compliment

It's new yes and yet it's been around a while.

I do keep wondering what the longer term users make of this massive influx. It's a bit like a cruise liner landing in Lyme Regis and disgorging it's passengers all at once. They all want take aways and what they can get at home without sometimes thinking about the impact on their hosts

Not directed at you but maybe some of your followers will read it

πŸ˜‰

@mikegalsworthy "it was coughing up blood this morning."
@mikegalsworthy
I was bewildered here last week. Getting better by the day. I like the concept of "not possible to sell it or dictate it".
