I applaud the noble motives behind PressCheck @daveleeFT, but FWIW Mastodon already provides a built-in verification system:

Long term, the best way to verify professional journalists in the fediverse is for their employers to run their own invite-only servers, so their staff can be @[email protected]

Even putting aside the thorny question of who verifies the verifiers, there's no way centralized verification services like this can scale, as you're already discovering ;)
