We have inherited a grandmother clock. Currently attempting to work out how it operates. There appears to be a giant weight inside it? My millennial brain is struggling.
Okay Mastodon. Where does the big weight attach? #clock
Update; we have removed the mechanism. Still no idea where the weight attaches.
@nitramarual is there a chain?
@thesweetcheat nope! It’s all very confusing
@nitramarual usually the weights would be attached by chains or cables to a pulley system. I think! It's a very long time since I've had one of these in bits.
@thesweetcheat we’re now working on the theory that the weight is a red herring to keep the clock from tipping over 😬
@nitramarual It most likely is (yay thread revival). That looks like a quarter-striking clock with two barrels - the power should be in springs in those barrels.
@dan we think that one of the barrels was over wound as when we released the pressure there was a massive bang and now when we put the key in it doesn’t gain any tension at all, just keeps turning and turning… so yeah, 99% sure it’s spring wound and also broken haha! Called some local clock people and there’s at least a 6 month wait too so I guess it will just be a beautiful ornament
