If you want to see Mastodon at its best, strongly recommend these options:

 Android - Use apps Tusky or Fedilab

  iPhone/iPad - Use apps Metatext or Toot!

💻 Computers - Log in through your server's website

Mastodon was designed for websites and third party apps. These are *still* the best ways to use Mastodon!

(Official app exists because new people were only looking for an official app in app stores, and giving up when they didn't find one. You don't need to use it!)

@feditips +1 for Tusky on Android! It works well!
@ablackcatstail @feditips
+ 2 really love tusky, website is great too

@ablackcatstail @feditips So, has anyone done an analysis on Tusky from a data/privacy viewpoint? (I'm generally suspicious about Android apps).

Even on teh twitters, I was/am 99.875% a terminal-based app user on computers. Oysttyer and Rainbowstream for those who are curious to know which ones.

@jrredho @feditips Not that I really know of per se. But Tusky is a community supported app with no adverts in it and no apparent monetization.
@ablackcatstail @feditips how do you follow hashtags on tusky?
@ablackcatstail @feditips but what advantages did it have over the official mastodon app?
@ablackcatstail @feditips what's the difference between tusky and official app
@ablackcatstail @feditips Just installed Tusky too, nice interface, looks pretty straightforward. Farewell bluebird, farewell bazillionaire weirdo.
@ablackcatstail @feditips A question - is there a way to see who I follow on Tusky? Otherwise seems nicer than the official app, but I'm still struggling finding out some stuff :)
@feditips second this! Toot! is great on iPhone so far.
@roojin @feditips I am a total knee be at this can you give me more details on how to use toot?
@feditips i couldn't even sign in to my instance on the official app lmao
@feditips I use Toot! and it's a beautiful app.

A client for the social network server Mastodon

@kev @feditips what makes it so good?

@evilmiera @feditips to be fair I'm mostly comparing it to the "official" app... Which I do like but relegates the local and federated feeds much more. Being on a small - but hopefully growing - server, they're important to me.

Also, Tusky is available on f-droid but I absolutely get that's a relatively niche concern.

@kev @feditips Thanks for the reply, I'll consider it at least!
@feditips I must say, I really like the clean official android app. Only when I need to bookmark stuff, i switch to Tusky. I hope that feature will be built in the official app as well.
@feditips Tusky on Android works very well. Question: how do I turn on notifications? Didn't see those, I have to do it manually.
@ditoferrer @feditips tap your avatar in upper left, then account preferences, then notifications
@feditips how can I move to a new server? Do I need to make a new account?
@marja
Hope I did this correctly. Still learning. If not, search for feditips for instructions on moving account

@marja @feditips You set up a new account and migrate the old one in

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#migration

Moving or leaving accounts - Mastodon documentation

Take your information and do what you want with it.

@marja @feditips Yes, but you can use the same handle and password if you like. You can export your followers from the old account and import them into the new account. It's all under account settings.
@feditips @marja Yes. You can of course follow people on other servers from your existing account. But if you really want to move to another server, here's a guide: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-basic-tips/#TransferringYourMastodonAccountToAnotherServer
How To Use Mastodon and the Fediverse: Basic Tips | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@marja It's somewhere in the preferences, there you find something to move to another server with your actual account
@marja @feditips go to the new server and create an account.
Under the user profile on the new account there is an option to migrate data from the old account. Follow the instructions to migrate

@feditips I think it worth mentioning @sengi_app

Sengi is a nice desktop client. It's quite convenient if one has multiple Mastodon accounts.

@zhenboli @feditips @sengi_app Seconded, Sengi has been pretty great to use on desktop.

@zhenboli @feditips

Thanks, @sengi_app looks pretty cool.

(I'm currently using the advanced web interface as a PWA which is working well but I'll check out Sengi too)

@zhenboli @feditips @sengi_app Thanks I'll try that on my PC. Is there any apps for android phone that supports use of several instances?

@feditips
On my iPhone, I get the best results by navigating to my account in Safari, then saving a bookmark to my home screen. I launch into Mastodon from there.

It basically acts like a full(er)-featured app. More functions than any of the iPhone apps you mentioned.

@feditips Yea, official app for Android is slow and ugly. Tusky works perfectly.
@feditips I tried Metatext and liked it, but I actually think the official app is faster and smoother.
@feditips Follow-up regarding my last comment ... I went back to using Metatext and now I like it better than the official app. 🤔

@feditips +1 Tusky

The main Mastodon app is missing features that it has

@feditips enjoying metatext 😄
@feditips On metatext one (out of three) of my accounts has a check mark next to it if I look at the account list. Any idea what that means?
@feditips Oh nvm. It’s just the currently active account. Duh
@feditips I downloaded tusky but I don't know what an 'instance' is for login. Can someone please assist me
@ktravis @feditips the instance is the server -- in your case sfba.social. And welcome!

@ktravis @feditips sfba.social.is yours

It's the server address after the @

@ktravis @feditips

The instance is the domain of your account... the server you registered.

In your case: sfba.social

@ktravis @feditips in your case it would be @sfba.social

@ktravis @feditips In this case, your instance is "sfba.social"

It's another name for "which mastodon server is your account with".

@ktravis @feditips

the instance is the server-address, in your case @sfba.social

@ktravis
That's just your server - sfba.social in your case. All this terminology is confusing!
@ktravis it's the server you use, so sfba.social for you
@ktravis it looks like your instance is sfba.social, so you should just be able to type that in.
@ktravis @feditips Your instance is mstdn.social.
@ktravis instance aka server…looks like yours is sfba.social
