This is worth a watch. We can enjoy football and the World Cup, and appreciate it being held in the Middle East and a Muslim-majority country for the first time, while also recognizing the undeniable controversies and human rights abuses associated with this tournament in Qatar:

“The World Cup starts today. @BBCSport asked us to look at why choosing Qatar as host continues to cause controversy. This is the 5 minute video we've made. Produced by Michael Cox, Mary Fuller and Nicholas Barrett. https://t.co/6niwX2Zl7W”

@mehdihasan ... I'm not sure I know how to enjoy it this time ... Saying this knowing fully that most if not all prior WC hosts had/have their own problematic (or worse) aspects that could have been cause for outrage or boycott ... But this WC's many issues are just so in your face, hard to turn off that part of my brain and ignore. 🙃

@mehdihasan I can't bear to support it without knowing what happens to people over there.

I'll follow it; it's inevitable. But watch it like the previous one? No. I just can't.

@mehdihasan Non bird site link for those, like me, trying not to support musk in his endeavours.

Ros Atkins on… Qatar World Cup controversies

BBC Analysis editor Ros Atkins looks at how Qatar won the World Cup, as well as the human rights and environmental issues surrounding the tournament.

BBC Sport
@mehdihasan No, sorry. I can't watch a single minute knowing how many lives were lost.
@mehdihasan agreed this seems to cover a lot though it doesn't talk about women's rights. It's important that we acknowledge the harm of large sporting events, especially in countries where inequalities enable additional oppression. Brazil for example flattened favelas for the Olympics. China and Russia too have problems with human rights... But then so does the USA, so does Australia, just less obviously. These events concentrate the harm though, and further enrich the wealthy.

@mehdihasan Watching your show this morning. WTF. “Did #Democrats impeachment failures destroy democracy?” How about Republicans refuse to uphold their Oath of Office and Rule of Law? And you showed this after a segment on #Journalist’s failures to call out Trump and Republicans crimes and hateful actions. Seriously, WTF!
