I must confess I don’t get how Mastodon works. One of the people following me doesn’t show up on my list. Why?

It's possible that the person moved to another instance (server), as there seems to be a lot of moving around happening.
It's also possible that someone followed you and will show up sooner or later on the list. A lot of the servers are overwhelmed with new people and things are moving slower than they should.

@joyce So if someone is on a different server you might not see them? Or interactions might be delayed?

If they followed you from one server and then moved to another one, they might have to follow you again (I'm just guessing here).
But yes, interactions might be delayed, not because of different servers, but because a lot of the servers are being overloaded right now as so many new people sign up.
