@jlobster I was wondering why my federated timeline looks so nice and topical.

Turned out it was because it's from people my follows are following!

@jlobster pretty good, but don't forget relays
@tomvonclef SO much to learn here, especially for the Twitter-literate.
@jlobster I was literally just asking a question that this answered. Thanks!!

@jlobster Is this from a toot or tweet?

I think there‘s a minor mistake: AFAIK unlisted Toots do appear in the Home timeline of the authors followers.

Unlisted only applies to the *public* timelines, i.e. Local and Federated.

So „not in any feed“ is a bit misleading. That being said: Great picture! ☝️😃👍

@markwyner

@Dadmin @jlobster you’re right, Dadmin. I should have used the word “profile feed” instead of just “profile.” I’ll post an update. Thanks for taking the time to offer feedback.

@markwyner Wow that was quick!

Could you let me know, when you updated it and where I can find the original? I definitely would like to boost it in my bubble, because it is so clear and concise 😃👍

@jlobster

@Dadmin @jlobster thanks, friend. I just updated the image (including alt text) with new wording. I also mentioned you and someone else who pointed out this ambiguity. Here’s my original post: https://mas.to/@markwyner/109344379408256020

@markwyner @Dadmin I've updated my post since it's getting so much traction with the edited tootlink. Still won't let me mention Mark without typing in the full username@instance. <shrug>

Thanks for your hard work!

@jlobster rockstar! All is well, just helping folks get acclimated to the culture. Boosts are a key player in how people and information are discovered. This place is wonderful for that.
@jlobster thanks for the credit. Much appreciated. It helps to boost other people’s toots, though, instead of creating your own.
@jlobster is there something like this about the groups?
@AndreaGhiselliChina Groups as in instances or lists?
@jlobster uhmmm like this @chinastudies
@AndreaGhiselliChina That is totally new to me, and very interesting. I will look in to it.
@jlobster Ah great! It seems to me that whoever posts tagging a group like that one will have their post seen by other group members in other servers. However, I was wondering whether it is possible to see the full list of the group members, rather than only those one's own server. It'd be great to see who else is in the same group so that it is possible to follow them directly.

@jlobster

thanks for posting this, i didn't realize the federated feed was as limited as this, i thought it was global.

this tells me you DO want to be on a larger server, so you can see more in your feeds.

does this work the same with hashtags like #fedtips ?

@skyfishgoo Still looking in to that. There's no text search (on purpose) other than hashtags, so I think hashtags are cross-instance, even if they're not boosted. 90, but not 100% sure on that.

@jlobster

my home feed came alive when i started following some hashtags, but i'm on a big instance.

@skyfishgoo Love it. So much hidden treasure to be found.

@skyfishgoo "this tells me you DO want to be on a larger server, so you can see more in your feeds." Yes & no. Larger servers make the fede-feed zoom by, so kinda less useful.

It's more that you want a server that carefully curates which servers it associates with so you can follow from a range of servers. At least if you're on a server to keep up with specific different folks.

@jlobster Is this really how it works? When I click on the "Federated" tab it says:

"These are the most recent public posts from people on this and other servers of the decentralized network that this server knows about."

That sounds like it's based on the servers your server talks too, not who you follow and who they follow.

@jlobster so there’s 3 different kinds of feed, I’m guessing on the mastodon app it aggregates them into one? I can’t see this distinction on the app.
@kasn Right. It looks like they tried to make it more like Twitter (and the web version more like TweetDeck), terminology included, but lost something intuitive in the process. Love the web version, but it needs a big screen to really work.
@jlobster Thank you so much! This is extremely helpful. #newhere #newbie #themoreyouknow
@jlobster This is great! The only thing that seems to be missing is notifications? I see my replies there. New followers. Everyone I have “hit the bell” to get notifications of their toots!

@jlobster @[email protected] :
As for the last box (posts boosted by someone on your server): Don't they also appear on your Local Timeline?

TIP: Capitalize each word in a hashtag to make it read out as individual words for screen readers. #accessibility
