While the desire for less trade friction with the EU is positive, the idea of sectoral agreements without freedom of movement is a straightforward return to the cakeism of old (hi @ottocrat and @[email protected]). To describe it as “Swiss-style” is misleading because, whilst the Swiss have tried to evade FoM, the EU has always insisted on it. The UK continues to act as if all it has to do is demand something and the EU will concede it. Sigh. #Brexit

On the + side, the discussion is uncovering the ° of support for SM & CU. That could -> irresistible. Then sumpn’s gotta give.

@SeanJones @ottocrat @GuitarMoog Appreciate the clarification. I find the news too depressing to follow closely. Years of protest. Just exhausted with this government which allowed a minority to take it this risky path for us all. Especially our children.

Aren’t the Swiss in Schengen? That would be a great start.

@SeanJones @ottocrat @GuitarMoog
Tories are looking at electoral annihilation. It’s worth them trying to dress up FoM with enough restrictions on jobs and benefits to look not much different than the current immigration regime in return for some precious economic growth and a slim shot at the GE
@SeanJones @ottocrat @GuitarMoog it is still like that great analogy about original brexit negotiations, the uk is negotiating in the penthouse suite of a skyscraper and the only tactic they have is to threaten to jump out the window if they don’t get what they want. It is bemusing to watch.
@JT66 @ottocrat @[email protected] Screaming “This is going to hurt you more than it hurts me!” All the way down.
@SeanJones As a fairly newly minted Swiss citizen, I can confirm that Switzerland has not escaped FoM, despite a public referendum in 2014. That referendum should have caused Switzerland to impose limits on migration from the EU. But the EU reacted quickly, immediately throwing Switzerland out of the then current EU research programme Horizon 2020 and out of Erasmus. It took a while for Switzerland to be back in.
