Toronto—as recently as 2018—had lots of active payphones because of relatively strong laws protecting them.

Unfortunately, I think some of that protection has eroded because last time I went back there was a noticeable change.

@LambdaCalculus a while back someone built a payphone art project. It was fully functional and used a cellular connection to provide telephony, but a microcontroller let it have a dial tone and act as a landline telephone.
