Konnte man früher tatsächlich das Telefonnetz mit einer Plastikpfeife aus einer Cornflakespackung kontrollieren? John Draper wurde als Captain Crunch weit über die Hackerszene hinaus bekannt. Eine Plastikpfeife aus einer Cornflakespackung soll ihm die Macht gegeben haben, das amerikanische Telefonnetz auszutricksen. Kostenlose Ferngespräche. Ein System, das eigentlich unantastbar schien. Und irgendwo in dieser Geschichte tauchen zwei junge Männer auf: Steve Jobs und Steve Wozniak. Doch um der Geschichte gerecht zu werden, muss man zwischen der Legende Captain Crunch und der realen Person John Draper unterscheiden. Der Mythos ist schillernd. Der Mensch dahinter deutlich komplizierter. Diese Episode führt euch in die Phreaker-Szene der 1970er Jahre. Und sie erzählt beide Geschichten. Die von John Draper. Und die von Captain Crunch. if you haven't hear of Par, he's one of the central characters in Suelette Dreyfus' exceptional book on the early australia-US hacking scene: Underground. it goes into incredible detail on their explorations through packet switched networks and telephony of the 80s and 90s.

There was a time when learning to hack meant learning to listen. The whine of a modem negotiating. The click of a relay. The faint echo on a long distance line that told you your voice had crossed a continent. Networks were audible back then. You could hear the infrastructure breathe.

Now everything is silent and abstracted. Fiber has no romance. Cloud has no sound. But the principle never changed. Systems still leak their shape if you pay attention. The language of networks is the same, the way they speak has changed and the way we listen has transformed.
