Maybe you all know this already but twitter allowed academics who are otherwise marginalised by white, male hieracrchies to enjoy reach and visibility. (Yes, I count myself as a beneficiary here).

For many who have 'odd' names that don't get cited as much, or people who cannot travel to present talks easily, or are not invited as often or speak in unfamiliar accents, it was a chance to let their work and message speak for itself.

We'll need to reclaim that possibility for everyone. #Academic

@SivaThambisetty yes. I got the feeling it will happen.
@SivaThambisetty I guess that's why you are here. :-) You're welcome!
@SivaThambisetty such a great observation! I think we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to shape our community within Mastodon to achieve an inclusive academia. Let's do what we can to make it happen. #Academic

@SivaThambisetty I get the “odd” (for some) names thing … but that’s also what makes some people stand out for me since I recognise them as (possibly) being from a place I know/knew … 🙂

But I do know what you mean and I support that.

@SivaThambisetty  You've hit on something that's been stewing in my head for the last few days. We've got a lot of a *certain kind* of marginal people here ♿ 🏳️‍🌈  but we're really lacking in BIPOC voices, and we need to figure out how to step up and get those voices included too. Am very willing to listen to - and boost - ideas as to how.
@SivaThambisetty I’m using this change as an opportunity to follow people I didn’t get exposed to on that other site. After coming here and trying to find people to follow, I came to the realization that I was never exposed to lot of great people on that other site. Someone who prided themselves with getting info from multiple sources, I was in a bubble and didn’t even know it. Now I’m making an effort to find people of diverse backgrounds.

@SivaThambisetty Unfortunately, that is one of the most significant and egregious consequences of Musk's actions (perhaps somewhat intentional on his part?)

Hopefully you find the Mastodon fediverse welcoming and we'll do our part to amplify your presence and of others experiencing similar challenges.

I look forward to reading your posts.

@SivaThambisetty It also meant that those of us on "non-academic" contracts or paths, who were still doing the work, could join the conversations. (Often people whose identities meant they were marganilised in other ways).
@SivaThambisetty It was one of the few aspects of Twitter I really enjoyed and miss here.

Same here; I did a lot of my 'finding people' global research via Twitter
