Twitter felt like a free flowing conversation between tons of people from all walks of life where sometimes you’d actually get to interact with some of your heroes. This feels like a non-threaded, lower traffic .net or PT without the alt-right.

I like both of those so that’s not bad and maybe I’ll figure out a way to get my feed to be different, but I don’t think it’ll have the same random discoveries aspect.

@thezzyzx you'll have so much more fun if you stop trying to make Mastodon be Twitter. It's different, intentionally. For now, I find this place to be so much nicer and more enjoyable with higher quality content and much less noise.
@sethadam1 where are you finding this high quality content? Maybe I just haven’t figured out how to make this work. Do you have tips?

@sethadam1 @thezzyzx I think it’s silly to declare what this is or isn’t, can or can’t, or what this will be when we’ve been here for a few days. It’s impossible to predict until/unless we start seeing critical mass.

As for finding quality content, it’s no different than Twitter pre-algorithm, except you also have the Federated feed as a resource. Find and follow authors/journalists/creators. Looks for hashtags, boosted posts, and recommended follows.

@thezzyzx @chopaganda what I said to @bizarchive yesterday:
@thezzyzx @sethadam1 @bizarchive @chopaganda A huge roadblock for me is that you (apparently?) can’t see a user’s followers who belong to another instance. So yes, I can hope a cross-server search works and maybe hunt down a public figure I’m already interested in following, but that’s one user without (functionally speaking) any network.
@bizarchive @thezzyzx @chopaganda @sethadam1 (I say in spirit of finding new techniques and correcting user error if applicable, not “waa this is different!” complaints.)
@thezzyzx @sethadam1 @chopaganda @bizarchive Is that something you can do on the web only?
@chopaganda @bizarchive @thezzyzx @JeremyDGoodwin perhaps. Things are changing quickly. Mastodon 4 just came out and very few servers are updated, apps are changing fast too. But I think for now, yes.
@chopaganda @thezzyzx @JeremyDGoodwin @sethadam1 @bizarchive I don’t think we’re the only ones bringing up these issues and I read yesterday that some of them are being discussed. Hopefully the fediverse will grow into something that has the best qualities of both.
@JeremyDGoodwin @chopaganda @thezzyzx @sethadam1 @bizarchive Wish I could find the toot where that was brought up.
@bizarchive @sethadam1 @JeremyDGoodwin @chopaganda I was telling this to Adam but for me, it’s the server feed. Every other social medium only shows my posts if you actively choose to follow me so I feel like I can post whatever but here I’m more cognizant about gumming up the feed.
@sethadam1 @thezzyzx
You need to use hashtags and put some effort in.
@sethadam1 I think what I don’t like is the local feed. It feels designed that that’s where most people will spend their time so this feels like posting to rec.music.phish. I feel pressure to stay on topic here (even Fruition or Shook Twins feels like it would be off topic) and so I think I’d need like 15 accounts on different servers to really get something out of this.
