Feeling lonely and lost here but not giving up!
@katfot It feels like a learning curve, but we will get there!
@katfot hello! 😊 Find some folk to follow and you’ll feel more connected.
@mustntgrumble I am trying! Kind people send me advise on Twitter 🤣 90% of the time when they say 'do x' and it will help, I am wondering how on earth you do x!
@katfot ah yes! That’s the advice i had too. Basically i committed some uninterrupted time to working out what each little icon meant (or tried to). I access via the web and switched to the dark setting (i think that’s what it’s called) where displays much like tweetdeck in the old days.
@mustntgrumble thaaank you. Yes, I shall try this, and more. Most I fail, but hey, I have learned to reply to people. It is a start!

@katfot small steps!

This little earth symbol allows you to choose message type (eg direct message, etc)

@katfot you could try a hashtag introduction with your interests as hashtags and also go over to hashtags and check if there's anything that interests you? It's new for a lot of us so just bumbling along myself hopefully you'll soon find your people
@JaneNewson @katfot I think on the official mobile app following hashtags is not possible yet, which is a bit of a bummer for newbies (like me). I do it via the web browser on my desktop computer, then reap the benefits on mobile :)
@JaneNewson thank you Jane, I am afraid I am way more lost than that. I just saw a post by you I liked and I realised, I do not even know how to like a post. Probably not called a post either. I'll get there but I was never a social media user and all is kind advice is just Greek to me. I learned a few things on Twitter after a long, long time

@katfot @JaneNewson
Hello! Write an #Introduction post. Boost (reblog) posts (toots) you like and want to share with others. If you favourite (star) toots, they don't get shared like they do in the other place so you're just telling the author you liked it. Pop up a profile pic if you can too.

You'll soon get the hang of things.

@katfot Please don’t . It’s going to be fine. I’m slowly finding people again.Another birdsite refugee. I’m finding this place much kinder and more interesting .
@katfot
Don’t give up! I’m liking it so far, but it really feels like moving to a different country!
@katfot first of all welcome to Mastodon! I have only been here a few weeks myself, being a former Tweeter. It is a bit empty here (or less hectic) but seeing what is happening back there has made me happy to be here. Hashtags are valid. Reblogging is better that favouring. Using content warnings to label posts is apparently tradition and one can use filters to block posts containing keywords. Oh, and use text to describe media to help visually impaired. Hope this helps.
@katfot make an intro post with some hashtags, pin it on your profile, set a profile image and you'll be away. The hashtags will help people find you via the things you're interested in. Follow people and many will follow you back!
@katfot Hi just followed you, with the servers working overtime it's hard to make any impact. Boosting your own introduction toot would help. People here are more prepared to hear from different viewpoints so good luck.

@katfot if you toot, people will respond. Post about yourself and include the hashtag #Introduction. Pin it at the top of your profile (easiest done on browser using 3 dots bottom right). Follow people who pique your interest and join in conversations. Ask questions you need answering about using this set of platforms - people will respond.

I’ve only been here a few days, but I’m wandering into things and meeting new people. They seem really nice,here!

Also, glad to meet you. Consider yourself followed! 🤝

Hi @katfot - not sure if any of these posts I have collected help you get started. I'm sure you'll be up and running soon. https://wandering.shop/@ElHadjiMurad/109250434910720494

@ElHadjiMurad I found these really useful, thanks

@katfot @ElHadjiMurad things will get better - stick with it 😀

An #introduction hashtag will be seen by others and follow those that you find friendly and interesting,

I use the Toots app which is quite like twitter in many ways

@katfot it's confusing and a little difficult at first, but my best advice is to go with the flow. Don't look for tight little groups but connect with anyone who feels interesting to you without any other agenda, and the beauty of the place becomes more obvious.
@katfot I'm getting used to it too!
@katfot This is a useful list of groups and instances to help academics find people.
I've only been here a few weeks myself.
Welcome.

@katfot hi Katerina, I second the feeling. However, this also feels a lot like the first days at a new job or school where everything is new and unknown 😊 I am sure soon it will change for the better 🤗

@katfot try the Fedi Directory -- https://fedi.directory/

It ought to help you find people to follow, based on your interests.

@katfot HI Kat!. Yes, it's much less straightforward than Twitter (which I am still using). Let's see...
@katfot Don't give up! Keep boosting, keep responding to peeps here 😊
