realizing that people assume twitter is some kind of "permanent public record" in a way, and this is probably shaping some of the expectations of people coming here from there. it's not really a "platform" or a "public square" in the way they would expect. you dont have to be constantly fronting. you're not putting yourself on display. you're just basically just sending emails that others can see sometimes. there is an ephemerality here that isn't there.
certainly this is controversial and there are clashing expectations, but one thing i found really interesting is that a *lot* of twitter migrants were upset that posts don't move with them. they want to keep their posts forever. and on one hand, i sympathize; on the other hand, i think you eventually reach a point where you stop caring. this space simply isn't built for archival or public records. there isn't (or shouldn't be) any expectation of permanence.
