Trump snubs Twitter after Musk announces reactivation of ex-president's account

Donald Trump on Saturday said he had no interest in returning to Twitter even as a slim majority voted in favor of reinstating the former U.S. president, who was banned from the social media service for inciting violence, in a poll organized by new owner Elon Musk.

This means two things which immediately affect the Fediverse:

1. Should Twitter survive (it won't), it will be a home for the Fascist-in-Chief
2. Trump is clearly giving up on Truth Social -- this is a warning to everyone trying to build a walled garden with Fediverse software

In the off-chance you're considering a return to Twitter: a return to Twitter is a vote for Fascism.

Some folks wonder if Trump really is coming back to Twitter...

YES!

Of course he's coming back to Twitter! He's now campaigning to become President!

Do you think everyone's going to register a Truth Social account to read his posts? Do you think Truth Social will start federating with the Fediverse so people will read his posts?

He will go to where his established audience, and that's Twitter!

In effect, Elon Musk is welcoming Donald Trump back to Twitter!

In case, you're all wondering, yes, Donald Trump's Twitter account has already been restored. He hasn't tweeted yet.

But it's a matter of time.

I have no doubt that Elon Musk is desperate for Donald Trump to come back because should Donald Trump win the Presidency, Twitter will remain *somewhat* relevant.

I want to remind all of you that a social network is only as powerful as its network effect.

And what is a network effect? The people who use the service.

A diminished network effect means Trump power on social media is also diminished.

Sure, his supporters will show up. They might even claim victory.

But it will be a pyrrhic victory if everyone who opposes Trump leaves Twitter.

What I'm saying: BURN TWITTER TO THE GROUND!

@atomicpoet the network effect that builds on follower volume than peer adjacencies seems to enable Twitter usage. What's the Mastodon glue, algorithmically speaking?
@jgblr No Home Feed algorithm! It's chronological.
@atomicpoet I can't say, I that I have understood. Hence asking here. Would it mean that this network grows instance after instance sequentially, when word gets around from one user to another? Hence slower yet steadier?
@jgblr @atomicpoet Sounds right to me. We *are* the algorithm. Individuals boost what we think others want to or should see, and make their own decisions about who/what they want to tap into—vs having a biased machine decide for them. It takes a little longer to set up, but then it is really yours.
