A question for those who understand this site: is there an easy way of following people on other servers?
@brecht_dp I’d like to know this too…
@brecht_dp I think you would just search for their handles and when their profile comes up, follow them. Are you not finding a profile you expect to find?
@rabia_elizabeth Thanks. No. It's just that, if someone is on the same server as you, you can just go through their follower/following list and follow the people you like. But that doesn't seem possible on other servers. You already need to know who you want to follow and then search for them. Seems a bit cumbersome...
@brecht_dp ah, gotcha. I never did it any other way on the birdsite, although lists of people were convenient ways to "follow" in batch.
@brecht_dp @rabia_elizabeth if you click on someone's profile, then their followers list, and can't see their followers, I think at the bottom of the screen you can see "browse more in original profile " if you select that then go to the followers list there it might work.
@Higginsmyles @rabia_elizabeth True. But it's still not easy, because you have to clock on every single profile before you can follow them... Oh well... 😜
@brecht_dp @Higginsmyles it's actually not a bad thing to have to do a spot check on the profile before you follow - or grant a follow request. Double edged sword I guess
@rabia_elizabeth @Higginsmyles Yes, I agree. It's just that, having been on twitter for a long time, there are many people I know/recognise, so I'd like to reduce the number of clicks and searches I need to do before I can follow them! 🙂
@brecht_dp @rabia_elizabeth Believe me I understand. I'm on the other site as well and finding things much different here. Have to say there are things that I'm not fond of here either. Not sure it will work for me but willing to give it a shot with the mess over at the other place.

Are sites like “Debirdify” useful to you?

I used it to generate a quick list of my Twitter folks who had (visible) mastodon handles. You can import the list as a CSV and follow everyone at once.

#feditip

If you know their user ID, you will need to include the full one with the @exchangename at the end, you can search for them or just message them and when they respond you can follow. Otherwise, if your not looking for someone specific, you can just scroll the federated timeline, the globe, and you can find people of interest to you. I'm new here myself, but I hope this helps.
@brecht_dp I used twitter search function...typed mastodon and then filtered by people I know to search for handles.
@Dryadula that's a great idea!
@brecht_dp I can't claim credit for the idea. I read it as a tip somewhere but I can't remember where.
